Efter mange år som andenpilot hos Flyselskabet Island, gik Gunnar Viggo Frederiksens drøm om at være førstepilot endelig i opfyldelse i 1967. Han fik æren af at flyve en spritny Boeing 727 fra fabrikken i USA og hjem til Island. Men da det viste sig, at Gunnar manglede hele tre prøveflyvninger for at gennemføre sit kursus, blev det ikke ham, der fløj afsted som førstepilot i cockpittet. Det gjorde Gunnar enormt vred og hans ansvarsløse opførsel resulterede i at flyleder, Jóhann Gíslason, var nødsaget til at fyre ham.
