Episode 98 - Dave, Physical, and more 2021 TV

from Talkin' TV

On tonight's episode of the #talkintvpodcast, we take a little bit of a step back from the dreadful and disappointing movies of 2021 to talk about what's in the title of our show, TV! We've been gifted with TV this year in a way that movies really have not been holding up to, and we first wanted to talk about some of our favorite shows of the year, the shows that really, truly exemplify the best of the best in the episodic storytelling landscape, such as For all Mankind, Hacks, Feel Good, After Life, The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, etc. So many great shows, so few people watching them. Then, Dom & Chris break down quite possibly their favorite show of the year, Physical, starring Rose Byrne, who portrays an 80's housewife with a severe eating disorder and an even louder self deprecating inner monologue who finds an escape from the hectic nature of her life through aerobics. It's everything we want from television and storytelling in 2021 in how raw and three dimensional all of its characters are. Then, they talk about the sophomore effort from Lil' Dicky's hit show on FX & Hulu, Dave, and how it seems to be more meandering and treading water this season rather than having any real focus, but how that seems to be the intent as a personification of Dave Burd/Lil' Dicky's real life struggles. It's another really fun episode, much more casual and laid back, and another reminder that we do more on this show than just the movie of the week.
