Episode Three - Self Cultivation
from Nerd in Shining Armor Hosted by Corwin Stark
The average human life span is seventy years. That's seven decades. That would be seven ten-year periods, two of which are spent too young and two more spent too old -— every decade matters. Every year matters. Every day matters. How, then, do we spend our time? As Lucius Annaeus Seneca states, "[we] act like mortals in all that [we] fear, and immortals in all that [we] desire." What, then, do we do about fear? What, then, do we do about desire? You may have met some elderly person who would tell you that "life is short" and that you should "enjoy it while it lasts." A person can do a lot in a year. A person can even do a lot in one day, or even one hour. How can a life of seventy years be short? Perhaps it's not a life that is short, but our priorities. Life is long. Many great thinkers have understood this truth and have used that time to cultivate themselves accordingly.
