She is the State Program Coordinator for Pennsylvania’s Child and Adolescent Brain Injury School Re-Entry Consulting Program called BrainSTEPS which is jointly funded by the PA Department of Education and Health (www.brainsteps.net). BrainSTEPS is a nationally recognized model that has been in existence since 2007. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) conducted an evaluability study on BrainSTEPS in 2017. The Colorado Department of Education adopted the BrainSTEPS model in 2016. For the past decade, Brenda has focused on brain injury educational program development, implementation, consultation, and training for the approximately 300 educational consultants serving on 30 BrainSTEPS educational teams across the state. She received her Master’s Degree in the educational aspects of pediatric traumatic brain injury from the George Washington University, where she now serves as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development. She is currently finishing a doctoral program at Johns Hopkins University focusing on Educational Leadership specializing in Mind, Brain, and Teaching. Brenda is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and serves on three national brain injury advisory boards. She helped create and is actively involved with the National Collaborative on Children’s Brain Injury (NCCBI). Brenda is published focusing on pediatric brain injury topics in education including building state infrastructure to support students, school staff training, and educational-legal safeguards. She also reviews manuscripts for peer review journals. Brenda regularly presents at the state, national and international levels, and has received multiple state/national awards for her work in brain injury. Currently, she serves as an expert external reviewer for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Report to Congress on Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and has also co-authored a CDC document on return to school. She was chosen as an expert concussion presenter for the Obama appointed Institute of Medicine/National Research Council Committee. Spearheading development and creation of PA’s Return to Learn Concussion Management Team Model, she has trained over 1,300+ school-based teams in PA, and the program was featured in the Wall Street Journal. She created a website with a colleague focused on empowering educators: www.getschooledonconcussions.com, and has been charged with co-leading the First National Concussion Return to Learn Consensus for NCCBI. Most importantly, Brenda has a brother who sustained a severe traumatic brain injury while they were teenagers, which is where her passion for helping families and students began.
