De La Rosa pasó su infancia en la frontera observando la interacción e intercambio desde Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo y McCallen USA, donde las calles y la iglesia constituían un importante espacio de recreación. Sus pasos como monaguillo lo llevaron a pensar en un futuro como sacerdote, pero una segunda oportunidad a la serigrafía lo haría enamorarse por la técnica conduciéndolo a una carrera como galerista y comunicador visual hasta llegar a convertirse en profesor de gráfica en Texas A&M University.
