EPS 584 Painting Past Fear; An Artists Toolkit for Creative Confidence with Monica Shulman

from Empowerography

My guest today is Monica Shulman. Monica Shulman is a New York-based artist whose brand of gestural abstraction is a form of story-telling. Rooted in the traditions of abstract expressionism, Monica’s world is best described as colorful and rhythmic and her paintings reflect an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. Primarily self-taught, Monica creates sculptural surfaces through her heavily layered impasto technique and her paintings exhibit a compulsive energy and the dynamic tension between reckless abandon and careful restraint. She engages the medium itself, specifically oil paint and oil pastel, as a participant in both her abstract and figurative works. In this episode we discuss art, confidence as an artist, creativity vs. artistic ability and mindset.   Website - https://www.monicashulman.com/  IG - https://www.instagram.com/monicashulman/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/monicashulman/ FB - https://www.facebook.com/monicashulmanstudio   In this episode you will learn: 1. What the difference is between creativity vs. artistic ability. 2. The importance of being vulnerable when creating art. 3. Ways to deal with and overcome creative blocks when they come up.   "Art was always kind of part of my life in the sense that my parents exposed me to it. I did take art classes when I was younger in high school and always had sort of my finger on the pulse, like very, photography." - 00:02:26 "I think that being vulnerable and the ability to be vulnerable is crucial to making art. I think that, it's almost like you're naked in front of the world. "- 00:39:14 "I think that listening to people is something that, that's like the greatest gift that you can give a person and again, like pausing, not being so much in a rush to get to the next thing." - 00:53:44   THE WORLD needs to hear your message and your story. Don’t deny the world of that gift within you that the universe has gave to you. Someone out there needs to hear your story because it will support them in feeling hope, inspired and even transformed.
