Eric Dane: Life, Career, and Battle with ALS

from The World Between Us · host Norse Studio

Eric William Dane (1972–2026) was a prominent American actor best known for his long-running television roles and charismatic screen presence. Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, Dane was raised in his mother’s Jewish faith and was a varsity water polo player in high school. He decided to pursue acting after appearing in a school production of All My Sons and moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s.Career Breakthroughs and Iconic RolesDane’s career spanned over three decades, starting with small roles in 1990s hits like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Roseanne. His most iconic role came in 2006 when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed "McSteamy," on the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Originally intended as a guest spot, the audience's reaction to his character led to him becoming a series regular for six seasons.Following his departure from Grey's Anatomy, Dane starred as Captain Tom Chandler in the TNT post-apocalyptic series The Last Ship (2014–2018). Later in his career, he underwent a significant artistic reinvention by playing Cal Jacobs in the HBO drama Euphoria. This darker, complex role earned him critical acclaim and introduced him to a new generation of viewers. His film credits include major productions such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.Personal Life and Health StrugglesDane married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004, and the couple had two daughters. While Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, she reportedly filed to dismiss the petition in March 2025 after seven years of separation. Throughout his life, Dane was open about his personal challenges, including a 2011 stay in a treatment center for prescription drug dependency and a 2017 production hiatus to address his struggle with depression. At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated at $7 million.ALS Diagnosis and Final YearsIn April 2025, Dane publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He had begun experiencing symptoms, such as weakness in his right hand, in early 2024. Despite the progressive nature of the disease—which led to him using a wheelchair full-time by late 2025—he remained a passionate advocate for ALS research and continued to work.Remarkably, Dane completed his scenes for the upcoming third season of Euphoria while battling the illness. He also appeared in the series Brilliant Minds as a character suffering from ALS, an experience he described as "cathartic" and "real". In his final public appearance in December 2025, he spoke honestly about the "horrible" nature of the disease but expressed surprise at his own "buoyant spirit" in the face of such adversity.Death and LegacyEric Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53, due to complications from ALS. He died surrounded by his wife, daughters, and close friends. Industry peers, including Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, remembered him as an "incredibly talented" actor and a gifted friend. His career left a lasting mark on popular culture, transitioning from a television heartthrob to a respected dramatic lead. Hosted on Acast.
