Escalating Violence In DRC – Slow News

from Planet Mundus · host Planet Mundus

As the current mandate of the UN Peacekeeping mission comes to an end on March 31st, and the Security Council needs to decide what to do with its longest and most expensive mission ever, violence is quickly escalating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). President Joseph Kabila is in the seven year of a five-year term, and has been finding excuses to postpone the elections since late 2016. In the meantime, there are over 120 rebel groups operating in the mineral-rich eastern part of the country, and more than 4.5 million people are displaced from their homes.
