The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, is outraged and dismayed by the fruitless and wasteful expenditure by Eskom, which was incurred in the building of accommodation for Eskom employees at Kusile power station. Power Utility Eskom has allegedly spent R840 million on a housing project for its Kusile Power Station staff, But the project of 336 units has been abandoned and still remains unfinished. The state-owned entity has allegedly spent more than R1-billion to date on renting accommodation for the same employees it had planned to house in the 336 units in the Wilge Residential Development project. In July 2012, Eskom entered into a contract with the Liviero Group to construct the Wilge flats. The group has since gone under voluntary business rescue, and one of its companies has been liquidated. The indebted Eskom has been struggling to keep the lights on over the past few years.
