España 82

from El Partido · host Nick Bell

After the death of General Franco in 1975, Spain was emerging into the world as a blossoming democracy. 1982 was presented as another 'Dictators World Cup' but following the end of the Franco regime, Spain was presented with an opportunity to showcase themselves to the world. The World Cup in 1982 was the one of the first true global contests, with teams from all four corners of the planet taking part in an expanded competition. It was truly a Spanish World Cup too, with 17 host stadiums across 14 cities as they welcomed the world's best players. It was also one of the most controversial World Cup competitions with several rule changes and attitudes changed after the contest. Join Nick and Paul for the final episode of Series 2 as we look back over the events of the España 82 and how Spain welcomed the world in the Post-Franco Era.
