Dave Alexander nació un 10 de marzo de 1938 en Shreveport, Luisiana y empezó a tocar el piano escuchando a su padre Tom Elam, que tocaba el piano y la guitarra además de trabajar en el campo, también escuchaba a pianistas de boogie woogie como Albert Ammons, Amos Milburn y Pete Johnson. Al principio el joven Dave Alexander comenzó a tocar la batería y a cantar en los coros pero su madre Susie, le animó a tocar el piano en la Iglesia. Allí solía entrar cuando no había nadie para tocar la música del diablo aunque le atraparon varias veces.
