Ethan Frome Prologue

In which a curious outsider, gathering his evidence as one gathers gossip in a small New England town, becomes increasingly preoccupied by the grave, broken figure of Ethan Frome, whose silence seems less a habit than the last expression of a life slowly besieged by duty, poverty, and winter.
