Maria do Céu Patrão Neves é professora catedrática de ética da Universidade dos Açores, tendo-se especializado em Ética Aplicada e, particularmente, em Bioética. Foi consultora da Presidência da República para a Ética da Vida. Foi Eurodeputada, entre 2009 e 2014. Tem assumido outras responsabilidades, no país e no estrangeiro, sendo actualmente Presidente do Conselho Nacional de Ética para as Ciências da Vida, Vice-Presidente do Grupo Europeu de Ética para a Ciências e Novas Tecnologias, Perita de Ética da Comissão Europeia e Membro da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. É autora ou coordenadora de 37 livros, entres eles Bioética Simples (Verbo), A Origem da Ética em Portugal (Fronteira do caos) e O Admirável Horizonte da bioética (Glaciar).
