De NAVO viert haar 75-jarig bestaan. 75 jaar waarin binnen het bondgenootschap sprake is geweest van vrede en vrijheid. Toch zijn we ons nu voor het eerst sinds de Koude Oorlog weer bewust van het gevaar van oorlog. En hoewel Europa zijn defensie weer aan het optuigen is zal het nog lang duren voor we op het juiste niveau zitten. 'Europa is een keizer met bijzonder weinig kleren aan', zegt voormalig NAVO-secretaris-generaal Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. De Hoop Scheffer is positief over het plan van de huidige secretaris-generaal Jens Stoltenberg om een fonds van 100 miljard op te tuigen voor Oekraïnesteun. Vanuit zijn eigen rol legt hij uit wat de secretaris-generaal wel of niet kan doen. Verder denkt De Hoop Scheffer dat Mark Rutte binnenkort wel degelijk gekozen zal worden als opvolger van Stoltenberg.
