European Union Migration Solution

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Some European Union countries have promised to take in migrants rescued from the Mediterranean Sea to alleviate the burden on Italy and Greece, but the details remained unclear. According to media reports, in an effort to avoid a chaotic situation, leaders agreed there should be “a shared effort”, but “only on a voluntary basis”. Countries will take in rescued migrants and establish processing centres to assess asylum claims on their soil. EU leaders called for migrant processing centres in North African countries such as Algeria, Egypt and Libya. To help us unpack the discussion for the day, we are joined by: • Mienke Steytler (in studio) The Media and Digital Content Officer at Amnesty International South Africa• Leon Isaacson is the managing director for Global Migration South Africa
