Eva Braun: Hitler’s Secret Companion Who Stayed Until the Fall of the Third Reich

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Eva Braun, the longtime secret companion and eventual wife of Adolf Hitler, chose to remain at his side in the Führerbunker as the Third Reich collapsed in April 1945.In the final days of April 1945, as Soviet forces closed in on Berlin and the Third Reich collapsed, one person made the fateful choice to remain at Adolf Hitler’s side until the very end: Eva Braun. For fifteen years she lived in the shadows—Germany never knew she existed—yet she would become the last and most loyal companion of the dictator responsible for the deadliest war in human history. Born in Munich in 1912, Eva Braun grew up in an ordinary middle-class family with dreams of becoming a film actress. Her life changed forever when she took a job in the studio of Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler’s personal photographer. At seventeen, she met a man introduced to her as “Mr. Wolf,” and soon entered a secret relationship that would define the rest of her life. Hitler kept her hidden for political reasons, denying her any influence while surrounding himself with luxury, adoration, and power. Braun, isolated and often desperately unhappy, twice attempted suicide to gain his attention. Despite this, she remained devoted, living a life of privilege at the Berghof while millions suffered under Nazi policies and persecution. As Germany collapsed in 1945, Braun refused every chance to flee. She traveled to the Führerbunker, where she found Hitler a paranoid, trembling shadow of the man she had once met. On the night of 28 April, they married in a small ceremony—just hours before sealing their fate. On 30 April 1945, they retreated to a private room. Hitler shot himself; Eva bit into a cyanide capsule. Their bodies were burned in the garden of the Reich Chancellery as the Red Army advanced. This documentary reveals the hidden life of Eva Braun—her choices, her loyalty, and her tragic place in history’s darkest chapter. This episode is part of the series Nazi Wives and Companions.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
