Evaluation Day: It’s Time to Start Weeding Out This A’s Roster
from The Las Vegas A’s Podcast — part of the House Always Wins Media Network · host Booney
The A’s came into Baltimore riding back-to-back series wins and promptly got swept, losing 4-3 in 10 innings, 5-3, and 8-5. The pitching once again became the story, with Jeffrey Springs getting crushed while continuing to receive starts, the offense leaving 25 runners on base, and the defense committing four errors. Meanwhile, the A’s repeatedly created opportunities and then found ways to leave them sitting there. At this point, Hobbs isn't pretending this is just another bad series. The season has become Evaluation Day. So who deserves to be part of what's next? Hobbs has plenty to say about Jeffrey Springs, Cade Morris, Jack Perkins, the bullpen's surprisingly solid work, and Lawrence Butler's offensive turnaround. He also aims at the recurring inability to bring runners home from third with fewer than two outs, the double-play problem, Jeff McNeil getting thrown out at home, the defensive breakdowns, and the crowded roster full of players seemingly filling the same roles. The question isn't simply why the A's keep losing — it's who should still be here when this team moves forward?
