In the heart of Nazi-occupied Paris, a Jewish family finds unexpected protection within their tight-knit, working-class community. It is 1937, on the eve of World War II, and young Bernard lives with his Polish-immigrant family in a lively Parisian courtyard. Though few other Jews reside there, the Parkiets feel a deep sense of belonging among the courtyard’s vibrant cast of characters. For Bernard, the courtyard is both sanctuary and playground—a magical world where he watches his father varnish furniture, gets into mischief with irritable neighbors, and shares pain au chocolat with his best friend, Titi.But when the German occupation descends on Paris, Bernard’s world is upended. In July 1942, just hours before the Nazis arrive to arrest the Parkiet family, their neighbors unite in a courageous act of solidarity, hiding them in a vacant warehouse.
