Evening Bite on the Oman Coast: Queenfish, Trevally, and Light-Tackle Groupers

We’ve got classic early-summer conditions along the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea: light to moderate afternoon sea breeze easing off toward dark, hazy but mostly clear skies, and warm water that’s really waking the fish up. Daytime heat has been pushing many bites into the low-light windows, so focus on dawn, last light, and into the night. Tides along the Muscat–Qurum stretch are running a decent mid-range cycle. Expect a rising tide pushing in around the late afternoon into evening, then falling through the night. That incoming tide tight to the rocks and reef edges has been the key for inshore fish, especially around points and small bays where current squeezes. Sunrise is early, just after five, and sunset is right around seven in the evening, give or take a few minutes depending on where you are along the coast. The best bite today lined up with the pre-dawn gray light and again in the last hour before sunset, carrying on into the first bit of darkness. Inshore, local skippers from the Muttrah and Seeb side are reporting good numbers of **queenfish**, **small GTs**, and **yellowfin trevally** smashing bait close to the surface on the flood tide. A few solid **spangled emperor** and **orange-spotted grouper** came from the rougher rock patches in 10–20 meters. Boats working a bit farther off Muscat have had scattered **yellowfin tuna** and **bonito** on the troll, nothing crazy but enough to keep it interesting. Artificial-wise, metal and flash are doing the damage. Slim chrome **metal jigs** in the 20–40 g range, white or pearl **bucktail jigs**, and small **surface poppers** or **stickbaits** in natural baitfish colors are the top producers for queenfish and trevally. Cast up-tide, burn them back fast with a few pauses; when they’re on, the hit is brutal. For bait, the usual suspects are hard to beat: **fresh sardine**, **anchovy**, or small strips of **squid** fished on a running sinker rig around reef edges and drop-offs. At night, a simple strip of squid on light gear is turning over emperors, small groupers, and the odd snapper for those soaking baits from the rocks or small boats just outside the harbors. If you’re planning a session, here are a couple of hot spots to keep in mind: - **Qurum–Shatti stretch near the rocky points**: Great for dawn and dusk casting from shore. Work poppers and metals along the drop-offs for queenfish and trevally when the tide is pushing in. - **Bandar Al Khairan area**: All those islands and coves hold grouper, emperor, and pelagics on the edges. Jig the deeper cuts on the tide change, then switch to poppers over the shallower reefs as the light fades. Night anglers soaking bait from the rocks near Muttrah corniche and the breakwaters have also been quietly filling coolers with smaller reef fish.
