January of 1988, in the close-knit community of Jefferson Township, NJ, Thomas Sullivan Sr. woke up to a fire in his home and his wife and oldest son nowhere to be found. Betty Ann Sullivan would later be found dead in her basement. She had been bludgeoned, stabbed and her eyes removed. The following day, 14 year old Thomas Sullivan Jr.’s body was discovered outside of a neighbor’s house. He had “allegedly” taken his own life by mutilating his wrist before nearly decapitating himself. A suicide note would reveal that Tommy had been involved in Satanism and the occult which, in turn, fueled the fires of the Satanic Panic.
