Excelsior-Class - Starfleet’s First Real Fleet Ship
from Lore Reloaded Hosted by Lore Reloaded
The Excelsior-class is one of Starfleet’s most important starship designs. Introduced in the late 23rd century as an experimental vessel to test revolutionary transwarp technology, the transwarp experiment failed but the design endured. Over the next century the Excelsior-class was widely deployed as patrol cruisers, diplomatic escorts, exploration vessels, and command ships for Starfleet admirals—notably serving from the USS Excelsior under Captain Hikaru Sulu and remaining in service through the Dominion War. Unlike classes such as the Miranda, which provided fleet numbers, the Excelsior supplied the command structure that enabled fleet operations, becoming Starfleet’s first true fleet ship.
