EXCLUSIVE: Dr. Yosef Sokol, Author of the Shidduch Crisis Study

from VINnews Podcast · host JewishPodcasts.fm

Dr. Yosef Sokol and a team of researchers have published a study about marriage trends in the frum community. If his data is correct, it would have major repercussions about how to define the Shidduch Crisis, as well as how to solve it.  Some people have questioned the results, methodology, and conclusion of Dr. Sokol and his team. In this exclusive interview on the VIN Podcast, Dr Sokol addressed the following questions: How is it possible that the vast majority of Charedi girls eventually get married, when that contradicts the perception of so many people? How does his data change the definition of the shidduch crisis? What is the real cause of the crisis (in his opinion)? Why did he use “self-identification” to determine whether respondents are Charedi, rather than using objective criteria? Why did he choose the term “yeshiva orthodox”, rather than Charedi or yeshivish other terms? How can he be certain that his study reached all segments of the frum community, including Lakewood? How many respondents were there from each community (eg Lakewood, Brooklyn, Five Towns, Monsey, Teaneck, etc) Does he have Rabbinic support? How can we solve the shidduch crisis, according to his research? Dr. Sokol is an assistant professor at Touro, a licensed psychologist, and a Musmach of Yeshiva Bais Yosef in Brooklyn.
