Exodus 1 – Pastor Chidi Okorie Oppression in Egypt the Rise of a Deliverer

Exodus chapter 1 opens the second book of the Bible with a dramatic shift in Israel’s story. After the death of Joseph and his generation, a new Pharaoh rises in Egypt who does not remember Joseph’s contributions. Seeing the Israelites multiply and thrive, the king grows fearful of their numbers and influence. In response, he enslaves them, subjecting them to harsh labor, and sets out to suppress their population growth. Yet, despite the oppression, the more the Israelites are afflicted, the more they multiply and spread. Pharaoh then commands the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill all newborn Hebrew boys, but they courageously disobey, fearing God more than the king. As a result, God blesses them with families of their own. Finally, Pharaoh intensifies his cruelty by commanding all his people to throw every Hebrew baby boy into the Nile River—setting the stage for the dramatic birth of Moses in the following chapter.
