Exodus 12-14

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, God had warned that one final plague was about to strike Egypt—the death of every firstborn. Yet He had also prepared a way for His people to be spared. Now, the moment of deliverance has arrived. God establishes a new beginning for the Israelites, giving them instructions for the first Passover. Each family is to choose a spotless lamb, care for it, and slaughter it at twilight. Its blood is to be placed on the doorposts of their homes, marking the houses that will be protected. The lamb is roasted and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, ready for a journey that will begin without warning. That night, the Lord strikes down every firstborn in Egypt, from Pharaoh’s household to the prisoner in the dungeon. A great cry rises throughout the land, for there is not a house without someone dead. But the Israelites are spared because of the blood on their doors. Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron during the night and commands them to leave. The Egyptians, desperate for them to go, urge the Israelites to leave quickly. They take their dough before it has time to rise, gather their possessions, and begin their journey out of Egypt. After generations of slavery, an enormous multitude of Israelites sets out, carrying with them the wealth the Egyptians had given them. God leads them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. But instead of taking the shortest route toward the Promised Land, God leads them toward the wilderness and the Red Sea. Then Pharaoh changes his mind. He gathers his army, chariots, and finest troops and races after the Israelites. Soon, the Israelites see the Egyptian army approaching and panic. Trapped between Pharaoh’s forces and the sea, they cry out to Moses, wondering why they were brought into the wilderness only to die. Moses tells them not to be afraid. “The Lord himself will fight for you.” Then God commands Moses to raise his staff over the sea. A powerful wind sweeps across the water throughout the night, dividing the sea and creating a dry path through the middle. The Israelites walk between towering walls of water, crossing safely to the other side. The Egyptians pursue them into the sea. But when morning comes, God throws the Egyptian army into confusion. At Moses’ command, the waters return, covering the chariots, horses, and soldiers. Pharaoh’s entire army is swept away. Israel stands safely on the opposite shore, having witnessed the incredible power of the Lord. The people fear the Lord and put their faith in Him and in His servant Moses. The journey that began with Passover and a hurried escape from Egypt has now become something far greater. God has not merely brought His people out of slavery—He has opened a path where there was no path, defeated the army that pursued them, and shown Israel that their deliverance rests in His mighty hands. Verse of the Day: Proverbs 21:7 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. Question of the Day: Are you committed to be in every task even if your efforts unnoticed?
