Exodus 27-28

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, God was giving Moses detailed instructions for the tabernacle, the sacred place where He would dwell among the Israelites. Now, the Lord continues revealing how the altar and courtyard are to be constructed and how the priests must be clothed for their holy service. God first describes the bronze altar, where the Israelites will present their burnt offerings. Constructed from acacia wood and covered with bronze, the altar is to be square, with a horn at each corner. Bronze utensils are provided for handling the sacrifices, and carrying poles are fitted to the altar so it can travel with the people whenever they move their camp. Every part is to be made according to God's precise instructions. Next, God gives Moses the design for the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle. Fine linen curtains are to form its boundaries, supported by bronze pillars with silver hooks and bands. At the entrance, a colorful curtain woven from blue, purple, and scarlet yarn will mark the way into the sacred space. The courtyard will set apart the place where Israel comes to worship the Lord. God then commands the Israelites to bring pure olive oil for the lamps, ensuring that the light in the sanctuary burns continually. Aaron and his sons are responsible for tending the lamps from evening until morning before the Lord. This duty is to be maintained through the generations, establishing a lasting responsibility for those who serve in the sanctuary. The focus then turns to Aaron and his sons, whom God has chosen for the priesthood. Moses is instructed to have sacred garments made for Aaron, garments that reflect the dignity and honor of his position. God appoints skilled craftsmen, giving them the wisdom and ability needed to create these special garments. Aaron's clothing includes an ephod, a robe, a chestpiece, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. Gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, together with fine linen, are used to make these garments beautiful and distinct. Two onyx stones are mounted on the shoulder pieces of the ephod. The names of Israel's twelve sons are engraved on the stones, six on each one. Whenever Aaron enters the sanctuary, he carries the names of the tribes before the Lord, representing the people entrusted to his care. The chestpiece is fashioned with twelve precious stones arranged in four rows, each engraved with the name of one of Israel's tribes. Aaron is to wear this chestpiece over his heart whenever he enters God's presence, continually remembering the people he represents. The Urim and Thummim are also placed inside it, serving as instruments for seeking God's decisions. Aaron's blue robe is decorated with alternating gold bells and colorful woven pomegranates along its hem. The bells are to sound as he enters and leaves the Lord's presence, so that he will not die. A gold medallion engraved with the words “HOLY TO THE LORD” is attached to his turban, marking his sacred calling. God also prescribes garments for Aaron's sons, including tunics, sashes, and head coverings, to give them dignity and honor as they serve. Linen undergarments are required to preserve modesty when they minister at the altar and enter the sanctuary. Every detail has a purpose. The altar provides a place for sacrifices, the lamps must remain burning, and the priestly garments reflect the holiness of the work entrusted to Aaron and his sons. Through these instructions, God prepares both the place of worship and the people who will minister there. Israel is learning that approaching the Lord is a sacred responsibility, requiring reverence, obedience, and careful attention to His commands. Verse of the Day: Colossians 3:13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Action of the Day: Give you resentment to God today and walk in freedom.
