Exodus 29-33

from The Safe Space Hosted by Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, God had given Moses detailed instructions for the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the garments Aaron and his sons would wear as priests. Now, the Lord establishes their sacred duties and reveals how He intends to dwell among His people. But while Moses remains on the mountain receiving God's commands, Israel will face a test that threatens the very covenant that binds them to Him. God instructs Moses to consecrate Aaron and his sons for the priesthood. They are washed, dressed in their sacred garments, and anointed with oil. Sacrifices are offered, and blood is placed on the altar and on the priests as they are set apart for holy service. God establishes a daily offering of two lambs, one in the morning and another in the evening, promising to meet with Israel at the tabernacle and dwell among His people. Further instructions follow for the incense altar, the atonement offering, the bronze washbasin, and the sacred oil and incense. Each must be prepared and used according to God's commands. The Lord appoints skilled craftsmen to create the sacred furnishings and reminds Israel to honor the Sabbath as a lasting sign of their covenant with Him. But while Moses is still on Mount Sinai, the Israelites grow impatient. They demand that Aaron make a god to lead them, and he collects their gold jewelry and fashions a golden calf. The people offer sacrifices, celebrate, and turn their worship toward an idol, forgetting the God who rescued them from slavery. God tells Moses what has happened and warns of judgment. Moses pleads for the people, reminding the Lord of His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God shows mercy, but when Moses descends and sees the idolatry for himself, he shatters the stone tablets. He destroys the golden calf, confronts Aaron, and calls those who remain loyal to the Lord to stand with him. Judgment falls upon the camp, and Moses returns to God to plead for forgiveness, even offering his own life if it could secure the people's pardon. The Lord commands Israel to continue toward the Promised Land, but their rebellion has placed their future in a precarious position. Moses pitches a tent outside the camp, where those seeking the Lord can go. There, God meets with Moses, speaking with him as a friend. Moses begs the Lord not to send them forward without His presence, declaring that God's presence is what sets Israel apart from every other nation. God promises to go with them. Moses then asks to see His glory. The Lord shelters Moses in the cleft of a rock as His glory passes by and reveals His character: compassionate, merciful, patient, and rich in unfailing love and faithfulness, yet righteous in His judgment of sin. Moses bows in worship and asks God to remain among His people, forgive their wrongdoing, and claim them as His own. God renews His covenant, warning Israel against idolatry and commanding them to remain faithful to Him. Moses spends another forty days and nights on the mountain, receiving new stone tablets. When he finally descends, his face shines from being in the Lord's presence, so he wears a veil when speaking with the Israelites. The golden calf has exposed Israel's weakness, but the story does not end in destruction. Through Moses' intercession, God's mercy, and the renewal of the covenant, hope is restored. The Israelites must now learn that the God who dwells among them is holy and just, yet compassionate and faithful—a God whose presence is their greatest treasure as they continue toward the land He promised. Verse of the Day: Galatians 5:1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. Question of the Day: Is there something that you have been beating yourself up about? Let it go.
