Exodus 34–36

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, God had renewed His covenant with Israel after the people turned to a golden calf. Moses returned from Mount Sinai carrying new stone tablets, his face shining from being in the Lord’s presence. Now, the Israelites must learn to live faithfully under God’s commands as they begin building the sacred tabernacle where He will dwell among them. God commands Moses to prepare two new stone tablets and climb Mount Sinai once more. As Moses stands before Him, the Lord descends in a cloud and proclaims His character: compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Though He forgives sin, He remains just. Moses bows in worship and pleads for God to remain with His people, forgive their wrongdoing, and claim them as His own. God renews His covenant and warns Israel against worshiping other gods or making agreements that would draw them into idolatry. They must tear down pagan altars, observe the Sabbath, celebrate the appointed festivals, and dedicate their firstborn to the Lord. Moses remains on the mountain for forty days and nights, receiving the covenant’s commands. When he returns, his face shines so brightly that the people are afraid to approach him. Moses delivers God’s instructions and wears a veil over his face whenever he is among the people, removing it when he enters the Lord’s presence. Moses then gathers the Israelites and reminds them that the Sabbath is holy and must be observed, even while the tabernacle is being built. He invites everyone whose heart is willing to bring offerings for the Lord’s dwelling place. The people respond generously, contributing gold, silver, bronze, fine linen, colorful yarn, animal skins, wood, precious stones, spices, and oil. Men and women alike offer their possessions and talents, eager to take part in the sacred work. God appoints Bezalel and Oholiab to lead the craftsmen. Filled with wisdom and skill, they work with precious metals, wood, stones, and woven materials, while teaching others who have been gifted for the task. The workers begin making the tabernacle’s curtains, joining them together according to God’s design. Protective coverings are prepared, and the wooden framework, silver bases, and connecting bars are constructed to hold the sacred structure together. As the work continues, the people bring more and more supplies. Soon, the craftsmen realize they have far more than they need. Moses announces that no additional offerings are necessary, because the contributions are already sufficient for the work. The transformation is remarkable. The people who once surrendered their gold to create an idol are now willingly offering their treasures to honor the Lord. Their generosity, craftsmanship, and obedience reveal a renewed commitment to the God who rescued them from Egypt. With the covenant restored and the tabernacle taking shape, Israel moves forward in its calling to become a people set apart for God. Their journey is no longer defined only by the miracle of their escape from slavery, but by the challenge of living faithfully in His presence, following His commands, and working together to create a sacred place for their Lord. Verse of the Day: Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Question of the Day: What friends are you thankful for today?
