Exodus 4-6
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, God had called Moses from the burning bush and given him an extraordinary mission: return to Egypt, confront Pharaoh, and lead the Israelites out of slavery. But Moses is still filled with doubt. What if the Israelites refuse to believe him? What if they question who sent him? God gives Moses signs to prove that He has appeared to him. Moses’ staff becomes a snake and then returns to a staff. His hand becomes diseased and is restored. And God promises that Moses can turn water from the Nile into blood. Yet Moses still hesitates, insisting that he is not an eloquent speaker. God reminds him that He is the One who made the human mouth and promises to help him speak. When Moses continues to resist, God allows his brother Aaron to serve as his spokesman. Moses returns to Midian, takes his wife Zipporah and his sons, and begins the journey back to Egypt with the staff of God in his hand. Along the way, a strange and urgent encounter reminds Moses that obedience to God cannot be taken lightly. Zipporah acts quickly, and Moses is spared. Meanwhile, God tells Aaron to go into the wilderness and meet Moses. When the brothers find each other, Moses tells Aaron everything God has commanded. Together they return to Egypt, gather the elders of Israel, and perform the signs God had given Moses. The people believe them. When they hear that God has seen their suffering and is concerned about them, they bow down and worship. Then Moses and Aaron approach Pharaoh with God's command: “Let my people go.” But Pharaoh refuses. He declares that he does not know the Lord and will not release Israel. Instead, he increases their workload, demanding that the Israelites gather their own straw while still producing the same number of bricks. The people are crushed beneath the impossible demands. The Israelite foremen appeal to Pharaoh, but he refuses to listen. They blame Moses and Aaron for making their situation worse, and Moses turns to God in anguish. Why has God sent him if things have only become more difficult? God answers by reminding Moses of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He declares that He has heard the groaning of the Israelites and has not forgotten His promise. He will free them from slavery, rescue them with great power, claim them as His own people, and bring them into the land He promised their ancestors. Yet when Moses delivers this message to the Israelites, they cannot hear it. Their spirits have been broken by the cruel demands of slavery. Still, God’s promise stands. Moses and Aaron are commanded to return to Pharaoh. The road ahead will be difficult, but the God who heard His people’s cries is about to reveal His power—and Egypt will soon discover that the Lord’s command cannot be ignored. Verse of the Day: Zephaniah 3:17 For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Action of the Day: List some things about you that you feel God delights in.
