Explaining The Dark Night Of The Soul: With Josh Hoffert

The dark night of the soul is mystical language that speaks to a specific stage in someone's spiritual journey where they undergo divinely inspired difficulty that forces them to grow into greater intimacy with Christ and subsequently have a more robust view of their own responsibility and role in the world. This Dark Night Of The Soul is an opportunity for individuals to find profound purpose and pursuit of God’s presence through their pain. This pain is an instrument of God's sovereignty used to carve away the dross of our careers, relationships, dreams, and personal identity. Job had his trials, David hid in caves from King Saul, Paul had his thorn in the flesh, these deep moments of trial and pain were all used to bring them to greater intimacy and dependency on God while revealing to them a greater awareness of their purpose in the world. Often in these moments of intense trial, it feels as if God has abandoned us, clearly, in the case of David, Job, and Paul this was not the case. In fact, for those who pushed through the trial, as they did, there was greater intimacy with God found on the other side. From Saint Ammonas in the 4th Century to Saint John of The Cross in the 16th-century, contemplatives have been writing about this "dark night of the soul" to help those weary pilgrims endure the trail in order that they may obtain a precious reward.
