She holds a PhD in Geography from Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, and an MA from Kenyatta University, Kenya. She has a wide experience in the study of women and livelihoods. She has published many articles and books on the subject. She has also been involved in gender activism in her country Kenya.
