Join us as we delve into a nuanced conversation with Professor Randy Brown, an award-winning historian, as he reveals the untold narratives of enslaved men in the British Caribbean. Through their discussion, Professor Brown sheds light on the complexities of family life for enslaved men in Berbice between 1819 and 1834, demonstrating how these men navigated their roles as husbands and fathers within the confines of slavery. Learn about the challenges of family separation, the struggle for familial bonds, and the silent resilience that shaped their existence. Uncover the silent stories of resistance, identity, and coping mechanisms that were often overshadowed in historical discourse, and understand the broader implications for Caribbean history and its enduring legacy.   Bio: Randy M. Browne is a historian of Atlantic slavery who specializes in the British Caribbean.  He recently completed The Driver’s Story: Labor and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery (Penn Press, 2024), which explores the predicament of enslaved Black drivers, trapped between the insatiable labor demands of white plantation authorities and the constant resistance of their fellow enslaved laborers.  Browne’s first book, Surviving Slavery in the British Caribbean (Penn Press, 2017), focused on the problem of survival in Berbice (part of what is now Guyana) and won the Ohio Academic of History’s Publication Award and the biennial Elsa Goveia Book Prize from the Association of Caribbean Historians.  Browne’s scholarship has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Library Company of Philadelphia, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Huntington Library, and the U.S. Department of Education.  His articles on slavery and the transatlantic slave trade have appeared in the William and Mary Quarterly, the New West Indian Guide, and Slavery & Abolition. At Xavier, Browne teaches courses on the African diaspora, slave rebellions, the transatlantic slave trade, and colonial America.   Website: https://www.randymbrowne.com/ Book: The Driver’s Story https://www.pennpress.org/9781512825862/the-drivers-story/   History Podcasts https://blog.feedspot.com/history_podcasts/ • Caribbean History Podcasts https://blog.feedspot.com/caribbean_history_podcasts/ • Caribbean Podcasts https://blog.feedspot.com/caribbean_podcasts/ • History Podcasts For Historians https://blog.feedspot.com/history_podcasts_for_historians/                                                                                                                                       Follow: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berkshirehalleppingpress/ Morning Journal Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CXMTL3NV Genealogy Workbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NRHG3M3 Prayer Journal: https://a.co/d/bfSdIl0 Devotional Journal: https://a.co/d/8K3C8Hk                                                                                                                                       Support The Podcast                                                                                           https://ko-fi.com/disafimihistory/tip                                                                                                         Clothes  https://effystyle.goaffpro.com/                                                                                  Reservations for Barbados                                                                                                                                                            https://diaspora-discoveries.com/reservations                                                                            Theme Music "Africa" is modern ethnic track with fresh chords, African vocal, orchestra.
