Plastics do not biodegrade but can break down through use, physical damage and abrasion causing microscopic particles to be released into the environment. These particles, smaller than 5mm in size are called “microplastics”. They can be ingested into our bodies and can be found in our internal organs and our brains. Microplastics have been found in fish and other animals which form part of the human food chain.
