When President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown began earlier this month in Washington, D.C., local officials and critics pushed back, arguing that federalizing the city and bringing in the National Guard was unnecessary because crime was decreasing in the nation’s capital. They said the crime statistics disputed the President's complaint that the city was "out of control." President Trump has since publicly questioned those crime statistics, and his Department of Justice has opened an investigation into whether the city’s police department manipulated the crime numbers to make the city appear safer than it is.
