Hi and welcome once again to history tweets. I am Jim. Welcome to the podcast where we take a light-hearted look at the Dark Side of History Today we have a very dark story Not sure how funny this will be because we're comedy podcasts and we like to do well Karen Barnes a beer One of our favorite listeners suggested this and it was so bizarre that yeah I want to do it, but it kind of goes against kind of our standards because we usually do don't have no goddamn standard No, we do remember we decided we weren't gonna do kids anymore. We weren't gonna do get on I know don't part of my contract we put that in my contract I'm just telling you I don't even know why I'm here and we don't like to do recent But this this is kind of this happened.

Well, I guess it's not so much recent anymore 2003, but I mean usually I like to do all ones where people were already dead and somehow it I feel better about myself I can find a bit I'm glad but that's what's important, but this is dark So this is gonna we're gonna this is the one where we'll listen or discretion is advice It's called I have you know if you listen to him right now if you when I got to that part no goddamn discretion anyway, so Okay, the topic is I have to be holder convicted murderer Andre Thomas Andre Thomas Man, it's do was fuck up. He's still alive That's it. Are you gonna warn the people? Yes, we get point shot We got damn language in here that you might not like we don't like it go find fucking go listen to Barney and do something Barney Barney the purple dinosaur get get veggie tails mother fucker this ain't for you if anything for you fuck you It's a moment.

You know what? I'm tired of the criticism on it I'm tired you can't introduce the devil over here. He's gonna introduce the podcast Story well first you got introduced the devil and I'm a little tired of the way to shoot I'm a little tired of the way you're just taking control everything to me. Aren't you double?

Oh my god first of all Timmy's homicidal So I'm just gonna let it go for now. I've had two coke zeros today. I see that Yeah, I was at lunch and I had like four cokes and I kept my reason like a refill and I'm better not I like to sleep sometimes I was just down in my office Masticated on my on my what? Masticate into me Masticated chewing I was chewing masticate to chew.

I got you. That's the chew double It's a chew can't spell out We are you make a good point we are a comedy podcast. We use a dot language So if it's a language offends you go fuck yourself Please listen to one of the other fine true crime podcast out there like our friends with they walk among us who by the way I'm looking forward to meeting Ben and Rosanna They're coming here this year. I want to get it.

I'm going to see him Chicago and then hopefully I'll see him in London too So I don't know what's going on. You know, we were also going to recommend that one that Rosanna cusses a lot Well, she kisses a lot Great job with the research and stuff and then does a great job. Are we gonna get on with our own podcast? Are we just gonna keep you know, we just you know what Rosanna's pretty and Ben's handsome It's really good.

You know, I'm a happy birthday. I'm a Rosa I don't know which one I have a crush on but you know Ben was you know what he did for her birthday He wore his history Guev's t-shirt for me did nice. I don't know Well, it is for me if I wore it now, you know what big away I got damn burlap sack He's gonna show up looking pretty hot, but with the history doing sing-on. He was smoking.

Oh, he was looking good. All right Let's let's get let me get into introduction so that we can I think so get into the story Let me introduce a lady who is known throughout the land in every little village in Hamlet You know you chime in when he says moral compass, so I'm chime in on you. I'll call you a whore. Okay.

I take that back was that mean Brandy, what is a hamlet by the way? What's the difference between a hamlet and a village Hamlet's are unincorporated. Thank you, really That's all right. I sound convincing Brandi the benevolence Her Majesty Queen Brandi the first how are you today Brandi?

Let me tell you something. Okay, both are hyper I'm the calm one in this room, which is kind of frightening Well, so this morning the electricity goes out at our house And it was as I was getting ready for work So I'm like whatever so I just kind of you know wash my hair down real quick and you know get out coming to work And I have had four motherfucking people today go. I love your hair including me I love your hair. I'm like what's up?

It's like you know you're like heroin cheek just it is I wish I look terrible in cheek I just slept in a car last night came to work. What's up? I'm like did you color it looks like gray hair if I got everywhere it's shit going on like no No, I mean it's just not you know, I have that 80s poof that look first of all I don't never have the 80s puffed out like I wish I did I wish I would I need big hair to come back in a big way It looks shorter you got a weave of something is that what you don't know I just pulled it behind my ears because it was you know Not doing anything. Well, yeah, so that's that's how my days going You know when I when I grew to Zvirtello my son told me it gave me a edgy homeless look That's kind of what that is accurate.

That's what you were looking at It probably is because you know my clothes were in the dryer getting the wrinkles out that stops So now I just I do I look like a homeless professional that just rolled out and came to work So now let me listen to the brain of time over so we can move on to Let's move on to the star of the podcast a man really who is known Far and wide far and wide as a man who's really the moral compass of our podcast A man who's who's been called an oasis in the desert of despair by no one Very honorable the Reverend the Colonel Charles Bullrigard Hawk Walters that they're affectionately known as the southern gentleman. How are you today? Colonel not good to me. I would for fuck sake.

I'm not good. Can you have a good day? I'm telling you why I know you have I know Sam fine I know you have trouble in your life, but when after you read the story your feel like your life is right on track No, I want you to think about this to watch orders and then I'm better okay. No, that's sick.

Have you seen that sick? No? Watch it's really good. Okay, continue.

I got them government shut down, Jimmy. Yes I want but it shut down to me. Yes. Okay.

Now. I want you to think about this Could you not get your tan enough about ten o'clock every couple nights or whatever? I run up to the 7-eleven. Okay, 365 days a Damn, yeah, 7-eleven is open 24.

I see my friend spider behind a counter Why they caught 7-eleven? I see my friend spider behind every night spider there to me. What's that tell you? Despite our habitat to spider web on his elbow Yeah, I like to hold anyway my point being like when spider can run an organization better than our elected representatives You think spider has 7-eleven?

I don't know all I know is every day that I pour in that door The 7-eleven is open 7-eleven is a superior organization to a goddamn government vote for spider Okay, if we could have spider in Washington, we'd solve all these that's your fucking beef today 7-eleven can stay open every year say why castle can stay open and you can get a big gop Yeah I roll our dog. Yeah. I got some cheese from our government one time I got a cheese like ladies. Oh that was something a nice issue I was like it was in like a nuclear fallout shelters or something You know there was nothing you could do and you know, I wasn't proud we took the government cheese There was nothing you could do to make that cheese melt.

Yeah, no, it was just no Before they were food stamps. They were commodities. They gave food away. Well, that's nasty when they're little books.

You had green stamps Yeah, I remember that yeah, dude. You know that Kroger up at the top of the hill. They sell hedgy And that is the nastiest looking shit. I have ever I stand there because sometimes whoever I'm with has to go over the deli counter I'm standing I'm like who fuck it if I had to slice that I would lose my shit You really have to be careful with I think I think that comes from uncircumcised goats.

I think it does too I think it does too. I actually think what happens is they fucking put the tip of their dicks and those things in that fucking cheese Because that is a nasty goddamn shit. Have you ever seen it? I'll tell you what nastier.

No, have you seen it? I've seen it, but let me tell you it's an amazing herb or some kind of voodoo shit One of our listeners when I was talking about my hip sent me a tip and said you need to get this tumeric tea Okay, you're a tumeric tea. You're ever drank tumeric. Huh?

It's like somebody to I can't drink tea It's like somebody okay, it's like trying now if there was a cup of if there was some motor oil on the side of the road And a panther came up and pissed in that motor oil Yeah, and then you put it in the microwave and warmed it up real good. Uh-huh. It's kind of like that Yeah, and then you know what they told me what try adding honey in it. Yeah, there ain't enough honey in the motherfucker world to make it Some John's soup and Thailand.

It tastes like literally someone just rants molten water, but some dirty socks in it I mean that's what you know what this actually this is like if a homeless guy Homeless hobo rinsed off his gonads in a water dripped into a cup Go ahead sweat. Go ahead sweat tea. Yeah, but this shit to me. I'm telling you it's like magic It lube up your hip and my knees and my hips did not hurt for three days.

Well, I don't know I think it was we probably it's but if you've ever if you've never seen head cheese It's in like this gel and it's in a loaf and it's got like parts in it and it's oh my god It's I thought his cheese was that stuff they collected on uncircumcised guys. Well, I think that's the nickname for it No, and actually I think you're thinking of funanda cheese. Oh, okay Let's get on with our story First of all, let's send our condolences to Amber Croupe our listener of Amber three years Yeah, it was one of our first listeners and she lost her dear dear grandmother. She was very close to her We're all sorry Amber.

We're all thinking about singing you love Amber And I would like to think as I mentioned Karen Barnes for a recommend in this story again This is kind of dark, but we'll kind of dark. That's okay. We're ready to roll. Let's go.

Let's go Go, okay, so I got a fucking day. All right. We want to inform you up front brandy Very dark in the stir I heard that somewhere look it discusses severe mental illness self mutilation and a murder Slash this this member mint of a woman and two children. Well, you've given it all away now.

We go home The search discretion is divide is divide is advised look special thing. I think you fucking warned him enough to care Barnes for suggesting Yes, wasn't sure. Yes. Okay, who suggested this?

This is the story of Andre Thomas your mom Andre Randy was born on August 8th 1983 We're gonna get trouble and raised in Sherman, Texas, Brandy and Sherman is a small town about 60 miles north of Dallas Oh, okay, it's this pertinent to the story well kind of because Sherman, Texas has a hist. They had a history of They've led in their water. No, they have a history of How do I want to say that? Spit it out for folks?

Well, you know, they're not the most progressive town they did some shady things and did some shady things with people of color in Sherman, Texas before let me tell you some yes I went down to Madison, Indiana. Okay, cool little town Walk into a store to me and I was like holy hell All they sold was Nazi memorabilia and clam memorabilia I'm out. That's all they sold. Yeah, and I know I started looking around it and Logan's with me and Logan's like and Logan Looked at the guy work about in counties like man This is kind of fucked up stuff and the guy's like man There's big money in this stuff people collect this stuff.

They will pay top dollar for it But that's blood money fuck that one. Yeah, they had clam membership cards for Sam See even I have a there is a really funny podcast called how not to raise a little Hitler It's really funny and they look at you know, they look at not just not season things But they look like Manson and they're like oh and they're two ladies and they're really really funny and one of them's on our Facebook page So it's a good podcast chicken how not to raise a little Hitler. Okay. I don't think I'm Madison, Indiana Okay, but anyway, no, I'm bad.

I don't want to say I'm not bad I mean this was their history is it was the segregated city. Okay. They done some shady, you know, they got it trouble passed And speaking of trouble pass Andre Thomas's family had a very troubled past His grandmother Vivian Vivian with the beach is close to Lillian, but not yeah Vivian with the V The zoo has a new salt named Vivian. I know I love her was a full-blown alcoholic by the time she was in her mid teens Yes, sounds like the devil hashtag goals.

So it's hardly surprising that she fell into with drunks as well much like the devil And one of his name Johnny which would be Andre's grandfather would beat Vivian regularly. I mean, I don't know if they had like a schedule, but yeah That's not cool, right not cool, right? You know when people say regular is like it is every time he had a bowel movement He beat her because he was regular. Yeah, I don't know but it was some domestic violence going on He was regular right there in the killer with a gun.

I'm assuming she goes par. Well, yeah, but you know, maybe Pissor Webber And this is not cool. He once flew through the ground when she was pregnant and it broke that Charles the baby's foot Oh, you know, that's rough. Yeah, I'm telling you this story does not get any better You know what that's I mean, you think about that.

That's gotta be that's force. Yeah, force and how it didn't harm her because now We're talking about Andre's grandparents. Right. Yeah, but I mean babies in in utero or cushion You know the bones are real rubbery because it's hard for those kids to break their bones or well Well, my kid let me say this getting that cast on is a motherfucker.

I bet it is I bet it is. That's not funny Okay So so so his grandparents were very you know that issues yeah Vivian I was never very selected with men. She had nine children with five of them with five different guys starting at the age of 14 There you go after Vivian left Johnny she married a man named Walter Martin and The pattern continued because he was a heavy drinker and there was you know steady diet of domestic violence So you know, that's not like a Johnny Cass song at the beginning of a Johnny cash there after Vivian left Johnny That's kind of you married a man named watermelon 1973 brandy sucks on yeah during one of their arguments Walter put a gun to Vivian said But she's kind of probably used to this you know, maybe Vivian and I'm just saying get married Maybe you know, it could be Vivian had a little we've been a attitude to if every time if Needed us to select better partners. I sound well and Gons put to add blaming the victim here, but I'm not blaming her I'm just saying fucking people to put guns to you head well, maybe you should just be alone now Swipe left on ten to once in a while Andre's uncle named Gregory.

He was 17 17 of the time tried to pull the gun away From his mother's head Vivian's hand and that's when Walter shot him in a stomach killing him. Oh, Jesus. Got shot him Yep, Walter would later boast that he planted one of Vivian's children and he fully intended to plant another one day He's a great guy. She got like 38 of them Yeah Now she had a daughter named Rochelle who was close in the age of Gregory the one who got shot She never really recovered from his killing that she started drinking at an early age She suffered from depression and according to her siblings, and these are all you know my preferences These are our published reports.

I'm taking this from so okay. It's out there. So we're not breaking any new ground here according to her siblings She was sexually molested by Walter probably That would do that doesn't look like a dick. I mean now right Rochelle's now the whole story now Rochelle's having these issues.

She was her brother was murdered. You know, she's in this crazy family She's everybody's drinking everyone's drinking. She's drinking she's impressed Right all those things are valid. So Rochelle was Andre's mother, okay, okay now.

That's just one side of the family tree. We're talking about here Well now is he Walter's kid? No, well, we don't I don't know that I don't know whose kid he is no maybe I do I'm sorry Danny was yeah Danny was right Danny Thomas who of course was a great singer and a great actor. Yeah Now Andre's mostly absent father his name was Danny Thomas and he came from practically the same background a generational alcoholism domestic violence and mental illness, okay, so both sides of this tree are fucked up one of his brothers Andre's brothers suffered from alcohol and deuce dementia Known as as Danny's one of Danny's brothers suffered from alcohol induced dementia.

You really have to drink a lot Yeah, you do another was locked up in a state mental now. This is what the term they use at the time state mental retardation ward That's a little harsh. Well, that's right I'm you know this is Texas and you know, this is you know, Texas in the 70s Yeah, looking at both wings of the family side by side is like looking at a things side of the Sink if you took one of those papers and cut it like a snowflake to me and folded it and unfolded it That's a pros you know that I had it as I go. I added as I go.

It was beautiful to me. So anyway, this is the family's The family, you know, there's family's popped here, right? But what did it all add up to when you stack the Andre's background against the removal of people's hearts, Randy fucked Yeah, we're gonna get to that girl alcohol Alcohol violence, mental illness, trauma. This isn't an unusual background for people on death row It probably started with Vivian the grandmother who claimed to have a gift from God, Brandy Oh more of a torment really, you know, no, she didn't she believed she received divine messages through dreams and visions and none of those divine messages said Hey that guy might not be good for you Only she didn't handle the gifts as one of her children recalled they handled her So she saw her raw talent as a line that one could approach but never crossed so she she's ambivalent about these messages Yes, she's getting these messages from God, but you know, she she's Concerned that they might be you know, you know what I do not like to me What I think it's rude.

Do you ever get a message from God at like 3 a.m. Sometimes. Yeah, I mean you lay in a deep sleep Well, but he's not the same I'm the same time zone That's true. He's all mountain time All right, so Vivian grandma He's texting me from the cloud Vivian grandma is getting messages from God now this would pass through to get in telegraphs that she had We'll pass through to her children.

Oh, how many of them had the gift? Rochelle had the gift She believed that she had been chosen to hear God's messages that her mother's gift had been passed down to her This proved to be a curse for her and Andre alike because Andre's gonna hear voices as well. No Way this could be schizophrenia or anything right right according to the jury. No God then told Rochelle what to do and she was certain that he was telling her son as well So he's you know, he's kind of laying out there day for them given him instructions That's good.

That would be kind of nice have all those decisions just made for you Andre was the fifth of Rochelle's six children all of them boys. Oh, Jesus. It's a sausage fast. It really is By the time he Andre came along in 1983 Rochelle already had sons by three different men five sons by three different men She moved around constantly She moves around I don't know if it was like evenly distributed It's gonna be a Maori She moved around constantly and often relied on the local church to pay her utility bills Yet despite living in one of the most chaotic situations which a little boy might find himself Andre somehow thrived.

Hey, somebody's got to I know yeah, he received low bar enough families right he received outstanding marks in kindergarten and first grade That is pretty low bar I mean either my children received high marks. I mean you know your judge against your peers Maybe did he not eat the guy little smiley's got more little smiley's than everyone else. I don't know but he was a good student Okay, and he was placed right now. He was placed in the schools gifted in talented program and first grade in first grade He's solving a second grade The second grade teacher described him as a strong and delightful student now he gets it becomes less delightful as time goes I was gonna say that's he or he would be honest about yesterday.

Don't you love how everybody on Maori all of a sudden becomes a geneticist Yeah, it is Remind look at his nose. Maori look at his nose. I'm a thousand percent. I'm always a thousand percent sure I don't make girl babies.

I don't think that's how that works Andre's mother meanwhile why he was in the gifted program couldn't say whether he'd hurt someone at the school or not as she would later testify She had so many children. She simply couldn't keep track of them all. Oh, so so this whole lady it lived in a shoe So this so this piece of shit mom, she has so many children You know she's you know she was actually using the kid no, but still so she's got all these kids and I'm not saying no I'm not saying that that's whatever that is whatever that is what it is Right, but you have these kids and you're not even sure that your six-year-old is going to school. You didn't know but when he He's getting up and going himself He attends the court by itself the probation officer.

Yeah This is not as absurd quite as absurd as it might sound brandy. I think that's not true thanks to Thanks to his mother Andre attended three different schools in three different cities in two different states And that was just in the second grade there you go He's rambling gambling man around third grade Andre started telling his friends that he was Raiden a character from the video game immortal combat. Yeah, I can see that. Yeah, I mean, you know if you're gonna be somebody I thought I thought people I'm Mario all the time.

It was you ever think you were a lower crop. I did not Would you bang lower crump like a drum boom and that is and that he is talking about the girl on the video game Not necessarily the live action. You know either one right I didn't see live action. Okay.

There you go Like his mother and his grandmother before him Andre started hearing voices got the gift, okay You may know secret of it lots of people knew that Andre suffered from what professionals called auditory hallucinations What if God's really talking to you see that's the bullshit thing here? What if what if people really talking to you from great and they say oh no, you have an auditory? I mean it was interesting thing about Moses right? Yeah, look where we went everything commandments at all You would have you would have nothing to guide your life I'm always amazed at the people that that supposedly God finds to talk through like there's always like this one guy That's got you know like no education no nothing and all of a sudden, you know Oh God spoke to me and he told me that I mean which I get like God talks to whores and you know poor whatever I do too You know what here's what I always want But I mean I'm like what you pick this guy in the middle of nowhere Omaha Nebraska Yeah, whatever the fuck you pick this guy and he's the one guy in all the guys in the world that know what's going on Well, here's what I don't get in it's done in a money Python movie too But do you think there were like 40 commandments and Moses was just like drop some not drop them as he went?

No, it's like that one. That's a lot of fucking bricks right there No, I know that coming up. I'm only gonna carry these two down this one. These are some heavy-ass rock I just hit a highlight just give me the key ones.

That's what yeah, that's what are the 10 commandments What are those that cliff notes? You know because only like two are illegal. Yeah, well, and you got murder. What's what you know?

I feel don't cover your wife's ass or your neighbor's ass. Yeah, I mean, there's wife's ass. That's considered rude, but I mean it's illegal I don't want to ask look don't you think of the commandments there ought to be illegal so what we Make cliff notes. Let's see if Colonel can name the 10 commandments.

Okay. There's only you know what as as our Lord Jesus said There are but two commandments He said love that guy above all other and love that brothers Alright do that. Oh, they will follow and name the name of 10 name the 10 commandments. Yes.

They'll shine out steel They'll shine out murder. They'll shine not committed. Oh, she'll not look at porn. Huh?

That's in there. They'll shine out white wine with red meat. All right, you can't look him up Look him up. No, the 10 commandments.

I could I could scroll through those and and I can't think I break four of them on a way to work every day. I mean, I mean, all right back to the story All right, we're back with Andre. He's starting to hear voices at age 10 He attempted suicide by slitting his wrist. Oh, he would try again three years later by sawing his arm with a butcher's knife Disturbable treble his mother notice.

I don't know he also began dabbing in dabbling in petty crimes, Randy That's surprising when he was 11 He was charged with criminal mischief after damaging some golf carts and later with theft for stealing a car and driving It into a ditch see he was 11 years old Can't see over the dashboard. Yeah, I don't steal your car until you can drive you should have your license You don't come to trouble. Well, you know, and if it's a stick shift. Oh, yeah, you're fine Yeah, as an 11 year old your fuck hell he faced the consequences brandy alone, of course he did no parent or guardian was on hand To support him when he first met with his probation officer or appeared in courts Of course not Yes, it's pretty fucker story His mother often would find excuses to miss appointments on one occasion telling the probation officer It was just too cold for her son to go outside.

Well, maybe it was well, they're in taxes one and second I think you kind of you have to make those appointments for your probation officer your PO They get they get pissed off. They're suggested as Andre grew older his grades slipped and he was forced to repeat the seventh grade I'm sure why that's important, but I just include that therefore right right He managed to climb back into the gifted and talented program despite his regression But his family life Continued to deteriorate when his mother told him to plan to move if she planned to move the family to Oklahoma He informed his probation officer and a judge placed him in juvenile detention facility because they're like no No, that's probably better for him. Yeah, exactly The justice system would become Andre's surrogate parent keeping tabs on his well at whereabouts and overseeing his life He wants to judge for a work permit so he could pay off the restitution and court fees only be only to be told that he was 14 and 2 young to work so I mean, you know This kid's already in big time trouble. He's 14 years old.

He's trying to work. He's trying to work exactly At age 16 on top of all his other problems Andre became a father you shall have no other gods before you go He found the 10 commandments. Yeah, no, I'm just gonna wait a minute. Yeah, now just I'm just gonna let him sink in You should have no other guys before me.

Okay, you stepped on my line that at age 16 Andre become a father. It's kind of key here Had he had been seeing a woman by the name of Laura Boren for several years in his 16th So I don't know how you see someone from several years. I guess they go to school together They they're going together. Yeah, they're going together for a few years Andre dropped out of school at 16 when Laura became pregnant He earned his GED and began doing various low wage jobs at one point digging graves at Sherman's West Hill Cemetery Okay, respect your mother and father to me.

I always do the couple found their own place for a while But later ended up moving in with Laura's parents and then later on with Andre's mother You devil you shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God The couple got married on Andre's 18th birthday, you know, I'm just not sure how she's thinking this is a good idea Well, which one any of them well, right Laura. Yeah, well the couple got married on Andre's 18th birthday And I'm just gonna I don't think I mentioned this. I mean I mentioned the racial overtones earlier for just for a fix Like Andre is African American. Yes, Laura is white.

Okay, okay So that neighbors were probably real friendly to them. They got married I mean this comes to play when we get to the Trial they got married on Andre's 18th birthday and his mother Rochelle kicked them out of her house two weeks later There you go, but nowhere they could go together and lived to live to live He was not respecting his father mother to the newly reds parted ways brandy Do you think one of them might have committed adultery? Now remember she's got a bit kid. Why did you tell him to look this shit up now?

Now it's gonna go on forever. Andre's already look up on titles are funnier, okay? Laura took a little Andre and hit their baby back to her parents house and Andre moved in with his brother after four and a Half-months they separated for good. Okay, so she got out she got out.

Andre's world already tenuous was falling apart brandy at this point He loved Laura. He loved his son He he lost some is his seasonal work mowing grass and struggled to pay for heat and electricity And because his place lacked utilities Laura would not let him visit with his son. So she didn't want her son over to his well. No, I empty apartment with no electricity, right?

Okay One of those helicopter parents Andre remarked to his father that he was in a circle that he just couldn't break out of he kept trying though and he sought out counseling for his Suicidal feelings and for the voices that wouldn't be quiet in his head by the time he was 19 They were blaring in his head like a brass band. You like that girl Did he get counseling in a night night marriage parade? It is his What's been it out there Elmer the voices in his it by the time he was 19 the voices in his head were blaring in his head like a brass band in a night Mary's sorry, I am fully erect that is so sweet Thank you And come on that's a pros at come on Keith's ain't writing nothing like that and during During his 19th year. He attempted suicide four times.

So did he ever find counseling? You didn't answer my question He sought counseling did he find it? No, he you get to end up at later at the time of the murders that we're going to talk about In a bit brand you're gonna talk about the Andre's behavior grew even weirder brandy You try to commit suicide. How many times at least seven and four in just one That's gonna be tough on yourself as me.

So now brandy is going to tell us about what happens next give it to us devil. Come on Yes, so Andre would stop talking for days at a time. He would put duct tape over his own mouth He fixated on the dollar bill imagine My life, I don't know that well he was imagining a code for his salvation amongst its symbols Little righty yeah, but Illuminati Before the killings he overdosed on core cedon It's a brand of cough medicine and wound up at a mental health facility in Sherman where he asked the staff to kill him now The tragic thing is he tried to commit suicide by take cough syrup. The good thing is he didn't his call from away But did go away perfect.

He could smoke all he wanted. All right, so he's right still doing his suicide away Yes, life is too much for me to handle he had told him somehow These dumb motherfuckers let him leave on his assurance because you know where does bond I seems like a well adjusted sure that he's going straight to a nearby hospital When he failed to show up Shocker it warrant went out for his immediate apprehension, but the police failed to enforce it Well, I'm really he looked like a guy you could trust well here's the thing When they they put out a warrant. They don't actually all the time actually see you down right into you right me Yeah Just wait to stumble across my you're not a bright criminal He's kind of sit there waiting for him to come two days before the killing Andre overdosed again and Stabbed himself with a knife. He walked into the ER at the Texoma Medical Center We're an attending physician deemed him suicidal.

Hey way to go guy Somebody got his diagnosis right and quoted him saying that a nice looking Halloween sure this guy might be suicidal That's one of the that's one of the key key key. It's clue. You got a knife sticking out in your neck Yeah, it's a sign. Let's see an Andre evidently told him that he was trying to cross over into heaven Thomas the ER doctor wrote is psychotic.

He thinks some he thinks something like holodeck on Star Trek is happening to him I'm not a Trekky son. I'm not sure. I'm not tricky either. No, okay Let's see the doctor would later testify that Andre was really the holiday.

Hold on the holodeck is where they stood with those beam things I don't know what it's a beam of study Yeah, he thought he was getting transported around We're gonna you know in this group of the leaves as a bunch of somebody okay somebody The doctor would later testify that Andre was really mentally ill and that's in quotes. So that's his you know Professional really professional diagnosis. I ain't fucking around here now Just got really mentally as if she stressed that this wasn't just a run of the mill crazy person They ain't your garden garden variety crazy Finally the patient wanted to know whether he had let me just correct a colonel crazy So I'll adapt is a reference to a plot in Star Trek in which the participants engage in different virtual reality environments It has nothing to do with Transporting like you Wait your guess, huh? Why did you wait your guess?

Why didn't you just shut the fuck up and let us move forward? Why did you wait your guess because you didn't know what the fuck you were saying? It was saying you wait sure. No, I was I was saying say I was back you there.

I have something to say. Oh, I had some say I got it wrong as I'm saving Yeah, but much like most things that you say was wrong and useless. You're gonna just you're gonna read this motherfucker You just gonna try and you just keep it now bullshit I'm sorry I had to crack the whole show to my home I know you look like I'm homeless love you love you Love you all right, so finally the patient will come in here what look like Dorothy Hamel show up a little bit I need some skates Finally the patient wanted to know whether he had volunteered for his life or been forced to live it Maybe that was the final straw the doctor referred Andre to the hospital's mental health unit and filled out an emergency detention order to hold him against his will You know Andre asked a deep deep philosophical question No, what's that because ain't none of us ain't none of us has to be born, you know So did he volunteer for his life or has he been forced to live it? It is a philosophical question, but Colonel, I'm sure you can relate to being institutionalized against your will have no I saw myself involuntarily then perfect in air quotes But while staffers waited for a judge to sign the order Andre wandered off That orderly had one job one job you want to keep you want to keep an eye on a guy with the I'll tell you you know they needed spider The hospital called the police, but there was no evidence that officers went looking for him at the home of his mother or any of his other relatives Health systems off School systems felony the judicial systems felling but continue yeah, well everything nobody there's nobody that's done this guy right that one doctor Tried to and you know he wandered off because he was really really crazy right so the next time anyway So I'm he was walking into the Sherman police station to confess to killing his family It's worse are you ready?

Yeah, no joke in here This is pretty bad on March 27th 2004 Andre Thomas stabbed a death his 20 year old estranged wife Laura Borden Therefore your old son and her 13 month old daughter in his wife's home He's a different knife to murder each member of his family while he explained which he explained to authorities was so he didn't cross contaminate Their blood and allow the demons inside them to live He proceeded to cut out his children's heart. Oh fuck's sake and inadvertently remove a piece of his wife's lung instead of her heart He was no surgeon with a little girl his I know leave I believe the son was his but the girl was from another father. I believe for another relation Let's see he stabbed himself in the chest, but did not die as fuckers like Rasputin for this motherfucker Yeah, how many times does he stand himself? I don't know he's committed to say at least nine ten times at this time.

He's tried to commit suicide. Yeah It's C so alright, so he stabs himself in the chest But he did not die so he placed the organs in his pockets because where else would you put them and walked to his house? Later moving the moving the hearts and piece of lung to a paper bag and throwing them in the garbage He called his now dead wife's parents and left a voicemail Shit well, and I'm gonna read a voice. I'm gonna read this voice mail here Sherry this is Andre.

I need y'all's help something bad is happening to me and it keeps happening and I don't know what's going on I need some help. I think I'm in hell. I need help. Someone needs to come and help me.

I need help bad I'm desperate. I'm afraid to go to sleep. So when you get this message come by the house, please hello You might wonder what Andre was thinking when he removed the children's hearts and placed them in his pockets to take home Along with the piece of Laura's lung which he mistook for her heart by his own account He received a message from God telling him to kill Jezebel the anti-cries and related evil spirit The only other hope nobody around here gets one of those messages double kidding now They were all thought we're coming right after you The only other clue was the dollar bill he had folded lengthwise and left next to his wife's leg Expose the pyramid with the eye on the top exposing the pyramid with the eye on the top So he's finding some symbolism in this dollar bill for some reason well pull out a dollar bill and look at the back for yourself I will above the eyes are the words annuit was it co-cope it's cop this coedus annuit co-annual coedus no No, I mean sex once a year. What does it mean, Randy?

Well, how do you say it? You're the Latin guy? I don't know and knew it co-ep this I don't know it co-ep this he approves our undertakings is what it means Okay, so he saw it as a divine message It's likely you haven't thought much about this but Andre did for hours at a time Maybe he was seeking approval, but the dollar bill seemed to confirm the words that kept pounding in his head Well, fuck I couldn't figure out the way to kill him so frequently can relat him But two days later when he was confessing his crime to the police he called the eye at the top of the pyramid evil a day after that He explained that he was the 13th warrior on the dollar bill It just so happens there are 13 steps on the pyramid for the 13 original states, but no reference to warriors His wife and kids weren't really dead. Andre told the jailhouse nurse.

He removed their hearts to free them from evil Just so he's in the gifted program doesn't realize that people need those to live Andre refused the anti-psychotic medication the jail doctors prescribed him But at least he had the Bible and when he wasn't acting belligerently or gesturing wildly or ranting about evil he would read from it One can only wonder what he thought when he turned to Matthew 529 Particularly in the light of his obsession with the eye on the pyramid if your right eye causes you sin the passage reads Gout it out and throw it away. It's better for you to lose part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell He's right down he's right there to me That excessive masturbation you should chop off your hands on Right This is precisely what Andre did sitting in his cell reading the Bible he gouged out his right eye with his fingers Take some commitment right there had it finally dawned on him six days after the killings what he had done There's a word for almost everything in this world and there's a word for the intentional removal of one's own eye auto and nucleation What little medical literature exists on this estate on this it states the obvious? Yeah, it's an extraordinarily rare form of self-unilation brought on by extreme psychosis It occurs with paranoid delusions often of a religious nature that accompanies schizophrenia and is occasionally Excuse me referred to as edipidism Edipus, yes, motherfucker. I know dude.

I'm very crazy. Of course. What would you do if you screwed your mom? You're gross.

That's the fucking story of edipis Get out of the way do you ever see them? I think it's a Mel Brooks when he's walking down Oedipis He's got the doctor glasses on. Yeah, and he bumps into the guy. He's the town drop the one-on right But anyway, he bumps into him and he goes watch where you go on motherfucker Always get the adipis complex.

I always always think of cyclops for some reason What's that? You know, I right here this came up and this not all is related, but we are supposed to From Chelsea Chelsea Neil about a job interview and a guy said you have your husband's permission to be here Do you see that? Yes, I did and it has nothing to do with this podcast. It does okay It does because that will you are around too extremely handsome man every day doing the podcast a lot of listeners do write in and actually Act what have you husband's permission to be here?

Well, a lot of them have asked write in and asked what it's like for a brandy to do a podcast with two very attractive co-host And I said, I don't know Alright, so do you have a submission? Alright, so Andre gouges out his eye, right? So for those that don't know It's a reference to the myth of Oedipis the king who blinds himself after learning that he has fulfilled a prophecy by murdering his father and sleeping with his mother Right and it's a course for Oedipis It was not schizophrenia or delusions, but rather his own guilt and the merciless fates that caused him to stab out his eyes I believe with a hat pen or something like that and then of course Oedipis complex Was a theory proposed by Freud? Yes saying, you know, basically you love your mother Well, it was Norman Bates He did butt stuff too for it Damn it After removing his eye, yes, Andre was placed in a secure wing of the north north Texas Closin and barn door after horses are out right well the horses the cows Everything else in there so they put him in a leg a dog got out He's actions are causing them concerned.

Yeah. Yeah, but those doctors later pronounced him fit to stand trial When Andre took his eye out the legal proceedings stopped in their tracks who knew what the man might say or do in front of 12 jurors It's not over yet for starters what for starters well look at this The authorities quickly equipped him with big mittens otherwise probably known as potholders fasten to his risk to prevent their removal You don't know if you're gonna pop out an eye or take out a Now that they're given wait now they're giving him the same treatment you give a kid with poison ivy Let's all of them finally said that Andre suffered from some form of schizophrenia You think Chuck had made that diagnosis I see no and check its belly But you know what I mean Stevie one to see that one from a little one of the imply that everyone in the schizophrenia would go round doing Crazy shit like this. It's just that was not being treated. No, he wasn't although He was failed by every one some some of Insane people as a reward not that dangerous right?

I think it's a paranoid schizophrenic Well, yeah, because they believe that people are right and they're hard to treat because they're hard to get trust But if they're taking a medication they can be vicious All right, so so you send in a sale big mittens on one eye well, right? Well, they're not They pronounce me fit to stand trial so then he pops out obviously So then they declare responsible for his actions So then they declare him incompetent to stay in trial because I don't know he comes in or this is out of order But anyway, so he's off they shouldn't back off to the state hospital where he continued to hear voices and talk to himself and seemed to have a Reoccurring dream where scorpions and tarantulas were trying to eat him That would suck at the end of 47 days of evaluations and medications the doctors concluded that most of the hallucinations were substance induced That's ignorant his Weird in the fact that he's institutionalized what was he substance? I guess unless it's the medication Of course Eden the robot doesn't you have that Doesn't mean some tussin he's the tussin we see an old guy in a neighborhood. He would call me his nickname was a cough sir That's not a very catchy name.

No, but he would I mean that's oh, that's he wouldn't drink alcohol anything You just drink off so I had a great grandpa that would drink scope when it had all the alcohol and shit in it He would drink scope. Yeah, I just stick to my embersom and Lister Damn, I'm a good breath. Well, here's the thing with you. That's like a really weird.

We need to have an intervention on that We do that's a that's some kind of fetish or something I don't know it's a good thing. I don't go Actually for me I think you got one thing on your guns No, but I tell you what what if you put the same figure on it. Oh, but I tell you what here's a mistake that I made Before you held it peeing it. Oh, here's a mistake.

I made before I just sort my been exercising had some sort of So I put some been gay on it and then I had a pee mmm I went to the bathroom and forgot that I had been gay on my hands. That's spectacular Yeah, but like a mother let me tell you here's a public service announcement for you people that later Yeah, when you're out in the woods hiking and you got a pee if you're a man rinse off your hands before you pee Oh, yeah, yeah, all right that happened to me. I'm serious about to be I mean it burns. Oh, yeah It burns.

I mean it was burning. I was like, you know, I felt like I don't know like I got a rears I didn't What I would assume that it feels like he just hands you a shovel until you start digging To send your brandy, okay, you know, they kind of re-enslame their dicks in the window You get it rid of it. They try to get rid of it. I'm gonna work.

What's lame a book on it try to get all the puss out of there Yeah, they thought yeah, they thought they could clear the puss out real good So they know you dick put it between two books. I'm gonna take you take it down on it a lot, you know, we talk about consumption all time to work with those people the gonorrhea in the early 20s entry killing a lot of people And you get that brandy when you have sex with people without protection Yeah, and so bad disease when you have sex with a lot of people yeah, like you did yeah, but Or Trying to get through school On scholarship to me she had to keep it to 3.2 every so If I didn't know history I would have done the same thing yeah I mean it's good for me in colonel. We're in half asleep with our professors But we love brandy continue please with your he's texting Renee again You'll be adding this On edge about C to double fuck you We're sorry, we did not mean to apply to you It was a it was a condition it killed a lot of people. I mean a lot of people died of gonorrhea in Early 20s Ten thing you're crazy can I please bring this pros to life girl all right, so this discharge order seem contradictory to discharge All right, so is discharge order seem contradictory doctor said that Andre was Malingering by exaggerating his mental illness and yet they still made him wear the mittens throughout his stay That was just for fun nothing says exaggerating your nothing puts that point home exaggerating your mental illness like popping your own Out he's crazy They also noted that he was consistently cooperative with staff behavior that is not at all typical of Malingers well because they weren't there playing them right if you're playing someone you're gonna act weird toward everybody You're not going to be compliant, okay, so Let's see Andre was now competent to stand trial They wrote and the court so found still the eyeball issue had gotten everybody's attention at one point as it will do Yeah, at one point the district attorney of Grayson County had called it the desperate act of a man who feared punishment I don't think that's it he popped his eyeball out.

I think he's going out as only you do that But as the trial date approach the prosecution seemed more circumspect after all the defense would surely argue that Arne was insane and Could even the most hardened da argue that he was faking it she said on that he had scooped out his own item and if you're in perfect For the prosecution one big decision made with the state seek the death penalty after all no murder no matter how heinous Depraved or just plain bizarre requires it ever since the Supreme Court outlawed mandatory death sentences 37 years ago These decisions have been left to the prosecutors in Texas district attorneys have used their discretion broadly not only in seeking the death penalty But also making sure it's carried out. Yeah, Texas is for those our friends outside the United States Texas is pretty aggressive when it comes to the institute of the death penalty is that for it? Fair to say colonel it you know what and we don't like to go into political things or whatever, but they have truly the Most fucked up system for the death penalty down there in the whole country. Yeah, they're very aggressive It's not that they're very aggressive the judge you can do a whole podcast on it the judge appoints the defense attorney and if the defense attorney Aggravates a judge.

He just doesn't get any more cases. I mean in It's a mess. It's a mess And I'm not somebody I'm not saying I'm a pro or anti-deaf penalty or anything else, but Anyway, the lone star saying you'll see from the rest is it's responsible for 30% of all the executions in the United States since 1977 so 50 states 50 states Texas is responsible for almost half. Yeah This discretion now the discretion has limits race for one cannot be considered at all not say never is but that is unconstitutional Do so, but it seems play a big role in capital cases Especially in one like the Thomas case where the victim is white and the defendant is black Lauren born Thomas Andre's like when late wife was black No, it was white.

I'm sorry. He was black. She was white the children were killed were a mixed race now these facts and this is And I didn't put all the testimony in but at one point the It was an all-white jury and at one point the prosecutor pointed to Andre and said would you want your daughter dating someone like him? I mean you could look at it Yeah, okay, you they're talking about someone who gouged out his own eyeball.

Yeah, but if fairness I wouldn't want my daughter Exactly, but there was an implication also that they were race-fading during but anyway continue but now these these facts were particularly important when it came to during selection For the jurors eventual jurors on the thing said they were opposed to people of mixed race backgrounds marrying or having children So they even thought that was bad. He had he had four lined up against him before he went in She's why even stated he did not believe that God intended this Andre's going to port the boys did not object. Yeah, the jury was seated either good. Yeah, I know it Yeah, when I was sitting down the entire jury not to mention the judge all lawyers the janitor the groundskeeper Have well, they were all white to me.

Yes, they were all white. It was it was yeah They have a weird system there they call shuffling and I didn't go into it in the script But basically they put jurors in this room and if one's not selected they they shuffle them around Yeah, and like on the third trial you have to take whatever the first 12 people yeah, and in this case they all happen to be white Yeah After a short trial Andre was feeling found guilty murder get the fuck out given the grizzly details of the crime Any eyeball incident more than a few observers one doubted leave up wondering how crazy person could still face excuse execution There's no answer to this state courts around the country have struggled to define intellectual disability also known as mental retardation since 2002 When the Supreme Court ruled that retarded people are exempt from capital punishment The court's use yeah, and they don't but there's no clear definition of what that is right right It's also the high court is also banned the execution who's in of anyone under 18 at the time of his crime But no court has ruled that severe mental illness makes a person ineligible for the death penalty now the general generally applied law Is that an insanity defense would only be available to someone who cannot understand the nature and quality of his act? Yeah, it's called a McNaught rule with it. Basically, I'll explain that to me I'm not aware, but thank you Colonel the McNaught rule basically says would that person have committed that act with a policeman at his elbow Basically, yeah, they compelled to do so so strongly or they still out of touch with reality that they could not determine Right, and I think one could argue that this is clearly a case where he he was not I mean he couldn't distinguish between what he didn't know what that was going on He popped out his own fucking eye.

Yeah. Well his his trial hinged on his spare question and but with one wrinkle in Texas if he insanity is caused by voluntary intoxication you cannot use it as a defense The prosecutor doctors testified that Andre was well aware that he was behaving wrongly and that his crimes may have him triggered by his Robitussing it's cough syrup is cough And his puss smoking now the defense called witness stand doctors who pointed to Andre's history of mental illness apart from any substances abuse and The man just plucked out his own goddamn eye Now, yeah, I think that would turn the case would turn on that if I was in the jury I would think was the state seriously suggesting that Andre's auto Innucleation was a rules. I think they were I believe there was no that's a far that's a little far to take The prosecutors argued it was an impulsive act to me. They did not dwell on it Of course, there's no retirement that attorneys have to spend lots of time talking about evidence and hurts their case They just said it was an impulsive act and moved on to me.

I don't need to well in the eye plug Yeah, the eye plugging so The jury moved on with him and Andre's insanity appeal was just off right out the goddamn window He's fine guilty four days later since death I mean Jesus it turned out that an impulsive act even coupled with orders from God in removal of hearts could not soften the punishment of From murdering three in Grayson County. I mean and I get that there were victims here and it's sad And you know it's there it was over. You know what it's bullshit. You remember the guy I don't know if you remember it to me the guy that killed the Proctor and Gamble executive They were this was years ago, but they were having an affair.

It was a young boy. They were gay He was they were both gay. He was but he was married to Proctor and Gamble I mean this guy was crazier than helped to me to get it. He still still Friday still did.

I mean It's just yeah, well, I don't know if they have a Friday and they gave him death penalty though It's just Well, it turns out that in a poof and pulse back doesn't do any good So they gave him death penalty after three years on a row There was a little question that Andre was getting worse and maybe it's more accurate to say that events were beginning to occur again Andre had always believed in what we call deja vu except he was convinced that he was reliving days and weeks in the totality. Oh Yeah, yeah much like these podcasting Yeah, I'm proud to be killing see complaining to his friends that he kept life kept repeating itself That's how I feel every day morning. I get up in the morning. I eat cream of weed I mean I eat my rap I go home and I well I play with the dog Yeah, that's pretty much like that.

That's why I pluck out tonight You know, I don't know the goat that crazy, but I woke up my fingernails and since things were happening over and over again It meant that they weren't really happening at all man. He had some philosophically deep shit here to me. Yeah, everybody's bad You know if I mean there's just so many questions there We could do a whole class on Andre's philosophy. We could but let's not let's finish this one I mean if everything's happening over and over again already happening at all think about that okay think about that It's now doesn't help that out.

You know we smoke weed before we start this podcasted But surely after his crime when he explained to the nurse that he and his wife weren't really dead It said this is deja vu from all reality double By late fall and Andre was acting much as he had in the weeks leading up to his crime He felt suicidal again asked for help but refused to take his meds now This is something you should do all the time double please take your meds before you Yes, please because I noticed on the day she don't take your meds you a little bit aggressive You know she is but when she said you one time you're bumfiddled with me double you bum fiddled with me no I did not bummed you know I know I bit you Bum that's a bumfiddle That time you don't know what bumfiddle is but I missed Bumfiddle is to attack. Oh far listeners Yeah, I'm fiddled with me double and that's why I think people like his podcast girl because they always learn something from you They do they always learn something you know I think I'm amends. Yeah, I read a book bumfiddle I'm like I played with his butt master Kate. How many of our readers out there master Kate and write this very minute and Masterbating right this man come on.

Come on. You know a lot of I don't like to listen to the smooth tones of the kernel by their going to bed. Oh my god So anyway, yes Massa mate and you don't already have gonorrhea That's true that's a good life test. Yeah, it's cheaper much cheaper for I'm gonna.

I'm gonna do this by late fall to me I'm really was acting as he hadn't leading up to in weeks leading up to cry in that shirt He fell to a side old again asked for help, but he refused to take his meds He stopped talking what me he came out to see his boy was scotch tape Coversily covering his mouth. He tries to tell and insisted on writing his answers on to her questions on a glass partition with this finger Okay, who's dossie? It's conceivable that his relapse was related to an incident in late November when he found himself in a cell next to an inmate Who he swore was the anti-Christ this enraged Andre who believed he had already done God's work and removing any Christ from the earth I'm a Christ is God gonna send it. Yeah, never more than you can handle So perhaps what he did next the things that got everybody's attention again resulted from a combination of all these things and on December what did he do Colonel December 29th timid 2008 a Mittenless Andre rip that is left eye There's only I and then the sum bitch ate it And swallows it.

I'll tell you what couldn't be worse than squid But anyway now now bling out a blind motherfucker. He's stumbling across his cell bumping into walls and shit Well, yeah, we're gonna do yeah, probably looking for some water watching it down. Yeah as he explains some days I didn't want the government to read the starts, so he ate the right eye because he was certainly would figure out some way to put it back in Yeah, he had said he had been reading the book of revelations which he quit reading To quit reading it cuz you know he popped out his eye. Yeah, well they got even zero eyes.

Have you ever seen a braille edition of a Bible? Have you ever seen a braille Bible? I don't think so. No neither is Stevie Wonder Nice no, I'm serious now you you know North College Hill right though No, you don't know References that most okay in our city we have cloven a comfort of mind It is the largest publishing place for braille documents of braille books They publish Playboy a braille version of Playboy magazine there if I pop out my eye can we finish this goddamn podcast?

I'm just saying make big breasts with the braille if there's a Center phone well you can feel around on the three now that I got the 3d brandon You got remember when they had scratches enough Yeah, but I always I think they was used official anyway alright And then he felt he became like Keith Richards and he got sympathy for the devil because it wasn't all Satan's fault. He said okay after all Andre was supposed to have been aborted eight days after swallowing his remaining I though Andre reports that he was hearing voices You don't you pass like anything else Fiber in it so my super team yeah, it came out the evaluation form Companying these remarks indicates that he is not present presenting delusional or paranoid symptoms and it is insight In judgment is fair. I really think that we need to read the Texas mental health system Do you think his insight and judgment is you did? Oh, yeah, I think all he has his insight.

There's no outside It's been nine years since the second eyeball incident, but Andre's prosecutors have not reported back about their record gathering on any subsequent evaluation Texas continues to force Execution he's presently awaiting execute in his house in just a four-unit for psychiatric evaluation and treatment He does not have a scheduled date of execution, but you can almost bet your acid or the Texas is gonna give him a shot They'll never see a comment Randy your final they won't have to blindfold your final thoughts Randy. Oh, I don't know it's a story. It's very sick your final thoughts on Andre I you know, he was just he was he was failed. He really really was I don't I don't feel bad I do feel bad for him, but you know, he fucked up, but I mean I feel bad This is this makes the case for institution we deinstitutionalize this whole country now We got people like him just wandering around we don't do anything for him and sooner or later they're gonna do some really fucked up things Well, what's fucked up is he asked for help he begged for help and nobody would help him he comes in with a knife stick And he put there you know, you know, but you know, we were talking off air and although he you know, obviously He's disconnected from reality.

It's almost you almost like if they execute him It's almost like it's doing you're doing him a favor. Yeah, I mean, you know, it's almost like a mercy I mean, you know, I mean, it's a real sad sad story, but thank you Karen Barnes for that uplifting fail Right.
