Shares in Taiwan closed almost flat Friday after recovering from initial weakness driven by cautious sentiment ahead of a speech planned by the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for later in the day. Large-cap tech stocks benefited from bargain hunting to help the broader market regain its footing by the end of the session, while transactions increased in the financial sector after Taishin Financial Holding Co. and Shin Kong Financial Holding Co. agreed to a merger deal. Taiwan hosts chef workshop to promote culinary tourism The Ministry of Economic Affairs is holding a workshop featuring renowned chefs and restaurants that started Saturday to enhance food industry exchanges and promote tourism in Taiwan. The Ministry says four acclaimed chefs, Andre Chiang, Zor Tan, Thomas Chien and Wes Kuo, were invited to the three-day workshop to share their experiences of working in fine dining. Representatives from restaurants including Shin Yeh Restaurant Group, and Jin Xia were also present, along with food critics (美食評論家) from different generations, to discuss their expertise. Deputy Economics Minister Chen Chern-chyi says the ministry will hold similar activities in the future, including a culinary competition called "Taiwan Select," to showcase restaurants and attract international and domestic tourists. British Journalist Killed in Russian Strike on Ukraine Reuters news agency confirms that a member of a British journalistic team has been killed after Russian forces struck a hotel overnight in eastern Ukraine. In a statement on social media, the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office said that the body was recovered from underneath the rubble (瓦礫) late Sunday evening. Two other members of the six-person Reuters crew were hospitalized. Local officials said the hotel was struck by an Iskander-M Russian ballistic missile, leaving the reporters with blast injuries, concussions and cuts on the body. US Harris Campaign Raises 540Million US Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign says she's raised $540 million dollars since announcing (宣告) her run for President in November's election. It's been over a month since incumbent President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Our US Correspondent Jagruti Dave reports. France Telegram CEO Detained French broadcast media reports say the founder and CEO of the popular messaging service Telegram has been detained at a Paris airport. Pavel Durov is being held on an arrest warrant (逮捕令) alleging his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offenses. Durov is a dual citizen of France and Russia. French broadcasters reported that Durov was arrested on Saturday evening after landing in France from Azerbaijan. French prosecutors declined to comment on Durov’s arrest when contacted by The Associated Press on Sunday. Durov’s representatives couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
