The market closed moderately higher on Wednesday as investors waited for the outcome of the U-S presidential election. The bellwether electronics sector once again acted a driver for the broader market, as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing in focus. Conscripts Test Domestically Made Portable Launchers A group of conscripts drafted following this year's lengthening of mandatory military service has fired domestically made portable (便於攜帶的) rocket launchers during a media event. The live-fire exercises took place at that Southern Taiwan Military Training Center in Tainan. Conscripts who spent several weeks training with man-portable shoulder-launched Kestrel and fired several rounds from the domestically built weapon system. Defense officials say most of the rockets hit targets some 200-meters away, however, one of the conscripts' launchers failed to fire due to a malfunction. The deputy commander of the training center says the launcher that failed to fire has been handed over the the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology for further examination. The conscripts were part of the first group that began their compulsory service earlier this year after the government extended military service for men to one year from the previous four months. Canada's industry minister says it is meant to address risks related to ByteDance Ltd.’s establishment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc. TikTok is wildly popular with young people, but its Chinese ownership has raised fears that Beijing could use it to collect data on Western users or push pro-China narratives and misinformation. Amazon Deforestation Drops Amazon rainforest loss in Brazil dropped by one-third compared to the previous year, according to official monitoring. The statistics were announced Wednesday in Brazil’s presidential palace, That is the lowest level of destruction in nine years. Moreover, deforestation in Brazil’s vast savannah (稀樹草原) also decreased by 25.7%, the first decline in five years. The area destroyed reached 8,174 square kilometers.
