Factionalism within the African National Congress

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape says it does not hold any grudges against four disgruntled members who took the party to court. This after the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg dismissed their application for a declaratory order on the Sbu Ndebele Report on the 8th provincial ANC conference. The four members from the province filed an application seeking the court to force the ANC NEC to implement recommendations of the report which recommended a conference re-run within three months. The chaotic conference held in East London last year elected Oscar Mabuyane as the chairman. The chaos comes after the ANC’s Kwazulu Natal consultative conference was called off early this month, following disruptions which took place before the conference when the party’s national chairperson‚ Gwede Mantashe was booed and prevented from addressing delegates. To help us contextualise this situation: • Thapelo Tselapedi, political analyst • Gary van Staden, political analyst • Susan Booysen, political analyst
