Dr. Grant Elliott with RehabFix Online Low Back Program: Failed low back surgeries are common enough that a syndrome is named after it! Failed Low Back Surgery Syndrome is when low back surgery outcomes do not match the expectations of the patient or doctor, or when the surgery ends up producing more pain than prior to the surgery. Failed low back surgeries affect 10%-40% of individuals that receive low back surgery. Lumbar fusion has a 30%-46% failure rate, and microdiscectomy has a 19%-25% failure rate. The issue here is not that surgery is inherently "bad", it's that a majority of invasive procedures such as injections or surgeries are prescribed inappropriately. There are specific clinical guidelines that need to be adhered to when recommending surgery and these guidelines are largely ignored and individuals are pushed to surgery far too often, and far too early. Just from 1998 to 2008 lumbar fusion surgery rates increased 170%. In this podcast I outline what guidelines need to be followed to ensure you are a good candidate for low back surgery, what makes a bad candidate for surgery, and what you can do to avoid surgery altogether. As always if you are struggling with low back issues and want to avoid drugs, injections, or surgery and finally get relief quickly with a proper plan then submit an application to work with me online using the link www.therehabfix.com/low-back-program Reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK539777/ To view hundreds of free low back videos please follow us on instagram at www.instagram.com/rehabfix and to learn more about how we can work together to fix your low back online please visit www.therehabfix.com/low-back-program
