Faith, Focus, and 1AM Call Times: The Life of Rene Knott

from The Circuit of Success Podcast with Brett Gilliland

What does it take to thrive in a career that starts at 1AM and never really ends? On this episode of The Circuit of Success, Brett Gilliland is joined by the indefatigable Rene Knott, a longtime TV anchor who’s spent decades showing up early, staying late, and pouring energy into every story he tells. From growing up in California under the steady influence of his hardworking father to transitioning from sports anchoring to hard news, Rene reflects on his 38-year broadcasting career, his relentless discipline, and the early wakeups that fuel his morning show.   With humility and humor, Rene reveals how faith and discipline keep him grounded, even when covering heavy stories or confronting self-doubt. He reminds us that showing up with intention—whether on the news desk, at home, or in service to others—is where real success is born. From powerlifting to prayer, this episode is filled with wisdom for anyone trying to build a life of impact and meaning. Rene Knott is a beloved local television personality and 3-time Emmy winner who currently co-anchors “Today in St. Louis” with Michelle Li on KSDK Channel 5. Named “Best TV Anchor” by STL Bucket List, Rene is passionate about telling human-centered stories that inspire and uplift others. Born in Hollywood, California, on May 2, 1964, to Ralph and Judy Knott, he played football and earned his degree from Southern Oregon State College, where he met his wife of 37 years, Marla. Rene began his TV career at KDRV-TV in Medford, Oregon, after initially dreaming of writing for the Los Angeles Times, but internships steered him toward the power of visual storytelling. He went on to work in Mobile, Alabama, and Washington D.C., before landing in St. Louis, which he now calls home. Starting at “5 On Your Side” in 2004 as sports director, Rene transitioned to the morning show in 2016—a role he proudly calls his favorite. He and Marla have two children: Easton, 33, a Washington University graduate and counselor at Georgetown Prep, and Eryn, 28, a MIZZOU graduate and kindergarten teacher in Colorado.   📩 Connect with Rene Knott Watch the Full Episode Here!
