An old banker was remembering a party he gave fifteen years ago. That night, the guests discussed the death penalty. The banker argued that the death penalty was more merciful than life imprisonment. However, a young lawyer disagreed: "To live anyhow is better than not at all."The banker, excited and spoiled by wealth, shouted: "I bet you two million that you wouldn't stay in solitary confinement for even five years!""If you mean it seriously," replied the lawyer, "I will stay not five, but fifteen years!"Part 2: The TermsThe bet was on! For fifteen years, the lawyer was to live in a small lodge in the banker’s garden. He could not see people, hear human voices, or receive letters. He was allowed to have musical instruments, books, and wine.Part 3: The TransformationIn the first year, the lawyer played the piano and read light novels. In the fifth year, he asked for wine and stayed idle. In the sixth year, he began to study languages, philosophy, and history. He mastered six languages! Then he moved on to the Gospels and science.During the last two years, the prisoner read an immense quantity of books quite indiscriminately He was like a man swimming in the sea among the wreckage of his ship, trying to save his life by clinging to one fragment after another.Part 4: The Banker’s DespairFifteen years had passed. The banker was now poor and ruined. If he paid the two million, he would be bankrupt. He decided to kill the lawyer. He entered the lodge secretly and saw the lawyer—now a skeleton covered with skin, sitting motionless. On the table was a letter. The letter said: "I despise your money and your world. Your books have given me wisdom, and I have found that everything in your life is empty and worthless. To show my contempt, I will leave here five minutes before the time is up, and so forfeit the two million."The banker kissed the strange man’s head and went out, crying. He had never felt such contempt for himself as at that moment.💡 核心词汇与精读笔记 (Vocabulary)🧠 逻辑分析：物质 vs. 精神这篇文章最适合练习上海高中要求的思辨能力 (Critical Thinking)： 角色的转变： 律师从为了钱（Materialism）打赌，变成了为了真理（Spiritualism）放弃钱。 I will stay not five, but fifteen years!" The lawyer spent three times as much time in study as he had originally planned. —— 倍数 + as + adj./adv. + as 结构。
