The American motor company Tesla recently announced that it is to begin selling its flagship Model S electric cars in China at a cost of 743,000 yuan--which is about 122 000 USD. There will be no dealerships, meaning the company will sell directly to its customers at a lower cost - and the price is comparable to what you'd get in America. Some though wonder how much of an impact it would have on the market here in China, with motor giant BYD dismissing Tesla's entry and promising to beat its rival in terms of quality and pricing. Throw in BMW and the market is looking rather competitive. But what is the demand like for electric cars and how practical is it to own and drive one here in Beijing, let alone the rest of China?
