薛汀哲出生于江苏省南京市，他5岁开始学钢琴，启蒙阶段先后师从李仲秋、叶慧芳，从那时起就可以用耳朵准确的听出复杂的和弦。7岁时被父母送去日本，在拜大柱惠为师；在日本求学期间，他还获得了“东京儿童钢琴比赛”第一名； [17] 之后，又在多个日本钢琴比赛中获奖。薛汀哲12岁时，以第一名的成绩进入深圳艺术学校，回国并转投但昭义的门下，成为李云迪、陈萨等人的同门师弟；15岁起，薛汀哲先后在国内外多个重要钢琴比赛中获奖。
