In which Farmer Boldwood, a solitary and serious man of strong but restrained passions, meditates quietly in his stables before his absorbed gaze falls upon Bathsheba Everdene, stirring feelings within him hitherto unknown and awakening a resolve to approach her. Meanwhile, Bathsheba, unaware of the depth of Boldwood's attachment, reflects with uneasy conscience upon the unintended influence she has exerted over his ordered existence.
