Farm Safety Day planned at fairgrounds

The Houston Bowman Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day—set for March 28 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds—will offer third- through eighth‑grade students a hands-on, education‑focused event aimed at preventing farm injuries, with sessions on topics such as food safety, ATV and machinery safety, large‑animal awareness, and more. Coordinator Olivia Brown of Sentara RMH Community Health highlights new additions this year, including home‑alone safety and disability awareness, while longtime committee member Art Mitchell—who lost both legs in a 1978 farm accident—emphasizes the importance of staying alert, understanding equipment, and teaching young people to respect farm hazards. Families must pre-register by March 20 by calling 540‑564‑3080, with all preregistered children receiving a goodie bag and lunch during the 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. event.
