If upheld, new U.S. imports and sales would stop, expanding the DJI crackdown and shrinking options for drone pilots and creators. OpenAI chases devices and growth - OpenAI is developing a voice-first AI companion device with Jony Ive while telling staff that revenue momentum is accelerating fast. Keywords: ChatGPT hardware, AI companion, ARR, enterprise growth, Codex. EU tightens ChatGPT Roblox rules - The European Union is expected to classify ChatGPT and Roblox as very large online platforms under the DSA. That would bring tougher transparency, safety, moderation, and child-protection obligations. DeepMind folds AlphaFold into Gemini - Google DeepMind has dissolved its standalone AlphaFold team and shifted talent toward Gemini and broader science programs. The move signals platform consolidation across drug discovery, genomics, healthcare, and energy research. China accelerates chip self-reliance - China reportedly began mass-producing domestic immersion DUV lithography machines as memory maker CXMT surged in value. Keywords: ASML, DRAM, semiconductor independence, export controls, state-backed capital. Washington backs photonics for AI - The U.S. Commerce Department plans a CHIPS Act award for GlobalFoundries to speed silicon photonics research. That matters for AI data centers, bandwidth, energy efficiency, and domestic chip supply chains. SpaceX eyes urban wireless spectrum - SpaceX is reportedly exploring spectrum suited for dense urban coverage, possibly through an acquisition or auction. The move could push Starlink toward direct competition with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Apple benefits from AI pullback - Apple briefly crossed a $5 trillion market value as investors rotated away from capital-intensive AI infrastructure bets. Strong iPhone demand and steadier spending helped make Apple look like a safer tech giant. Open-model AI policy fight intensifies - Major AI companies signed a letter opposing a U.S. ban on Chinese open-weight AI models. The debate ties together AI security, open access, industrial policy, and the economics of the wider AI supply chain. Episode Transcript FCC targets DJI clone makers First, the FCC has begun revoking approvals for nine companies selling drones and cameras that it says are effectively DJI clones. If the move stands after the public comment period, new imports and sales in the U.S. would stop, although products already sold would keep working. One notable target is Xtra, because it sells camera gear as well as drones. The bigger takeaway is that Washington’s pressure campaign now appears to be widening beyond DJI itself, which could further narrow the market for pilots, filmmakers, and businesses that depend on lower-cost aerial tools. OpenAI chases devices and growth OpenAI is moving on two fronts at once. On the consumer side, it is developing voice-first AI hardware meant to make ChatGPT feel more like a daily companion than just a phone app, with former Apple design chief Jony Ive reportedly involved. On the business side, company leaders told employees that growth remains strong, with July’s annualized recurring revenue now running ahead of what the company brought in during the entire second quarter. Put together, it looks like OpenAI is trying to turn its software lead into both a new device category and a much larger enterprise business. That expansion is also arriving with legal friction, as Apple accuses the company of using trade secrets in AI hardware work, a claim OpenAI denies. EU tightens ChatGPT Roblox rules In Europe, regulators are reportedly preparing to classify ChatGPT and Roblox as very large online platforms under the Digital Services Act. That label would mean tighter obligations around transparency, risk management, and user safety. For Roblox, child safety concerns are central. For OpenAI, the pressure is more about how AI systems handle harmful or illegal content and how clearly those decisions are explained. The broader point is that both AI services and gaming platforms are being treated less like novelty products and more like infrastructure that needs formal oversight. DeepMind folds AlphaFold into Gemini Google DeepMind is also making a notable internal shift. Its dedicated AlphaFold team has been disbanded, with many researchers reassigned to Gemini and wider science efforts. AlphaFold itself is not going away, but the reorganization suggests Google wants more of its research to run through one shared model platform instead of isolated flagship teams. That could make Gemini more useful in areas like drug discovery, genomics, and energy research, while also tying DeepMind’s science work more closely to Google’s cloud and commercial AI strategy. China accelerates chip self-reliance On semiconductors, China’s drive for self-reliance keeps moving forward. Reports say the country has started mass-producing its first domestically developed immersion DUV lithography machines, a symbolic step in one of the most strategically important parts of chipmaking. Analysts are quick to note that building a few machines is very different from proving they can run reliably at scale, but it is still a meaningful signal. Add to that the rapid rise of memory maker CXMT and a funding system that channels capital into priority sectors, and the picture is of a country steadily building a more independent chip ecosystem despite export controls. Washington backs photonics for AI The U.S. response is taking a different shape. The Commerce Department has signed a letter of intent to back GlobalFoundries with a CHIPS Act award focused on silicon photonics research. In simple terms, that means using light to move data more efficiently inside high-performance systems. It matters because AI data centers are running into both bandwidth and power limits, and silicon photonics is one of the technologies that could ease that strain. Washington also wants more of that capability based domestically rather than overseas. SpaceX eyes urban wireless spectrum SpaceX may be preparing an even bigger leap beyond satellite internet. Reports say the company is exploring spectrum that works better in cities and dense environments, potentially through a carrier acquisition or a future government auction. If that happens, Starlink would start looking like a much more direct rival to the traditional wireless giants. A full-scale carrier deal would be expensive and difficult, but even this possibility shows how far Elon Musk’s telecom ambitions may extend beyond rural connectivity or niche coverage. Apple benefits from AI pullback In the markets, Apple briefly became only the second company ever to cross a five trillion dollar valuation. The timing is what stands out. Investors have been cooling on the most capital-hungry AI and chip names, worried about debt, spending, and softer cash flow, while Apple has benefited from looking steadier by comparison. Strong iPhone demand and less exposure to the most expensive part of the AI infrastructure race have made Apple look like a comparatively defensive tech bet. Open-model AI policy fight intensifies And one last AI policy story to watch: Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and other big names signed an open letter opposing any U.S. ban on Chinese open-weight AI models. Their argument is that broad restrictions could hurt innovation, enterprise adoption, and parts of the AI supply chain. Critics say some of that openness also happens to align with the signers’ business interests. Either way, the debate shows the next phase of AI policy is no longer just about model capability. It is increasingly about access, control, and who gets to shape the rules.
