Fear Not

In this deeply personal sermon preached during a time when Spurgeon himself was battling depression and discouragement, he explains that before Christians can accomplish anything significant for God, they must first recognize their own complete weakness and worthlessness (like a worm), then trust in God's promised strength rather than their own abilities, and finally let go of their fears by remembering that God has promised to help them. Spurgeon candidly shares his own struggles with dark moods and feelings of inadequacy, but encourages both himself and his listeners that God deliberately allows us to feel weak and helpless so that we will rely entirely on His strength rather than our own—and when we do trust Him completely, there's no limit to what He can accomplish through us, just as He used ordinary, weak people throughout Scripture to do extraordinary things. He concludes by urging Christians to stop doubting God's faithfulness, since fear is painful, weakening, dishonors God, and robs believers of the dignity and power they should have when trusting in an all-sufficient God.A sermon delivered by Charles Spurgeon on October 4, 1857.
