On February 9, 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed to hold a list of 205 communists in the State Department. He had no such list and it didn't matter. His Wheeling speech launched a wave of persecution that destroyed thousands of lives, and his chief counsel Roy Cohn went on to mentor a young Donald Trump. The consequences are still with us.
