Feds: Southwest Philadelphia mail handler beats coworker with steel pipe

from KYW Newsradio Audio On-Demand

He heard his co-worker talking behind his back, so he hit him with a 25-pound, nearly 5-foot-long steel pipe. That's what federal investigators say a Philadelphia mail handler did, leaving his colleague seriously hurt. It happened at the USPS Processing and Distribution Center in Eastwick last week. The feds say Steven Louis grabbed a safety bar from a piece of mail equipment, confronted his co-worker, and hit him -- first in the chest, according to a witness, and then in the head. The victim was knocked off his feet, unconscious, and bleeding. He suffered a fractured cheekbone and needed 18 stitches. Court documents say Louis, who lives in Bustleton, admitted to the attack. He's charged with assault on a federal officer and could face up to 20 years in prison if he's convicted. (Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images)
