Um, no apologize I was there literally four years ago. I just briefly I'll tell you guys the story because it was Yeah, please do it was diagnosed three years last about three and a half years and then went into home hospice At the height of covid and it was like she has to be home Like we and so I just like flew from New York and and moved back to Minnesota This one I didn't have a place or anything and I ran at a house and I got here Memorial Day weekend and I had a quarantine for two weeks before I could be get be on the care team the house that I rented This is Memorial Day weekend on a Sunday Monday George Floyd was killed one from the house that I rented So I could not go protest. I was in this house quarantining with chaos surrounding me It was my seat and then I just did it and I know I you know all of it You're exhausted their dignity what is going on? It is fucking terrible ALS people just need to find each other because it is a specific thing that we share and it's real So I'm so I agree and I and it's been Yes to everything you said it's been such a unique fucked up Heartbreak and and I've just been completely upside down, you know ever since her diagnosis And I mean I remember when my dad called to tell me, you know He said I just wanted let you know that your mom we finally have a diagnosis and it's it's ALS and and I remember kind of feeling Like I don't know what it was, you know, I was just like what is that?
What's ALS and I've quickly learned, you know and my dad who Really is you know kind of Minnesota and just buttoned up and is like, you know, I'm not gonna let you know How I feel about that G. That's you know hug this way distanced, you know, and he was teary and then he hung up Like he couldn't even handle hearing me then realize what it was and It was horrible and honestly it's been so Call me anytime because sometimes I also know like this is the thing I learned is like having as many people You can do this like to talk to about it. That's not just Lou or just not somebody gives everybody in your life a break And I think that that's super important. So like I I want it when I read your email I don't I just I could barely process it because it was so odd.
It was like my god I feel like she's like my older sister or something I know when you said that I was like wait a minute. Yeah So And I and I I don't know yeah, it's odd But maybe it's not and I thought gosh, you know what I cuz I go there almost every month and I'll be back in February and I thought maybe if you're around we could go have dinner or something honey buns How are you doing there? I I only went there and I just drank there a long time ago But when I lived I so you know you said you when you came back during COVID you were one block away from where George Floyd was murdered That's where my last apartment was as well is where I live before it's so the parallels are truly crazy Yeah, I know Chicago I have to actually Find out what the exact address was but I worked at the wedge and I you know like I drove like that route down to Lake then and to go to work every day and It's just really surreal and I have good friends from high school who live in that Live in that neighborhood still and live through it and It's it's hard.
I'm really worried you know for all of them And I've been trying to call and check in and hear their voices and hear how they are you know And it's not great. It's really no Nothing though really I feel like I was talking to a friend of mine last night And you know there's just been so many people who have been like who are good folks But who've never like stepped out into the world and really like done shit that would be considered like activist He stuff yeah, and I think but as you know Minnesotans episode of build for this moment because it's the the neighborly Sort of way that we've learned to be and I think a lot of it's just living in the North quite frankly Yeah, but like making you know everybody on your block You know when that older lady who's been living by herself, you know, you haven't seen her get in her mail You know you always know to check in like whoever wakes up first after snowstorm, you know hits the sidewalks and and does a thing and You know if somebody has a tragedy There's always a gathering whether it's a house fire or whether it's a whatever like people mobilize and so like I think that The makeup of humans here allowed them to just kind of jump into a new way to be part of community in the protest way It's like what can I do and in the way that people think about helping like how are we gonna help the people that are just like snatched By ice and they don't have any coats We're gonna patrol the parks because they're dropping them in parks without shoes without coats So now we just have like neighbor patrols to get people home get them safe See if they're have had any damage from the inclement weather and stuff and you both know Minnesotans, you know, you know, Lori B You know people, you know, like we're just like good people. You give a shit It's so fucking true and I think that's exactly right. It's kind of like they all went It's sort of weird but to like equate it to like the potluck But like everyone was kind of like what can I bring, you know, like what am I gonna bring to the potluck?

It just disappeared Oh, I'm just thinking about that And I love this that you're saying that they're finding a new way to come together And maybe people who have never done this before it is it is in their bones to be like well wait a minute I can't show up empty-handed, you know, it's like instead of the hot dish They're bringing their fucking like coat or they're maybe gonna do something even a little scary and walk someone to their car, right? And yeah, and even put their body between Someone else that they're gonna they're gonna take risks and I think that it is so Minnesotan It's kind of like the perfect place that they picked to fuck with because and I hate to put it that way But do you know what I mean?
Like because I can't say it. Yes They are I do feel like people actually don't really understand how diverse the Twin Cities are they have literally no idea when I tell people I'm from Minnesota They immediately think like just white people in the middle of nowhere on a farm, you know, and it's like yeah There are some of that but I grew up in the city I didn't have any connection to that, you know, it was extremely diverse and That was my reality from birth, you know, and I'm where I live in Massachusetts It is white like this is super white and but the Twin Cities. I mean the Somali community Uh, community's been there for so long so so long. I mean this isn't a new thing Right community.
I mean what? So I mean, that's what I often say is, you know, Minnesotans, you know, anybody who can Help our food game because it was really bad And then as immigrants became part of the fabric and part of our community and part of the definition of who we are as Minnesotans It's like thank you for making the potato better. Thank you for making rice interesting Thank you for taking all of our gray foods and turning them into magic. It's like what's it been doing We've literally been surviving on weird gray meat and gruel forever and it was like, oh Holly, we ride a dawn for you for fixing things for Oh my gosh, well, you know, I I didn't grow up like in in some like little bubble I mean, granted my parents are both artists and they're very, you know, like progressive But still like everyone in my neighborhood, you know Was in each other's business and we we doing our thing and eating each other's food and in each other's lives and um We I don't know.
They're so funny So can I tell you this story really quick about when I got I was stung by a bee this kind of Illustrates, I think how people in the neighborhood will jump immediately to help others in Minnesota So, you know, this is whatever 1982 or yeah, and I'm little girl living on the west side in st. Paul near the bluffs and Um, everyone in my neighborhood first off It was all neighborhood kids on the street all the time playing we knew everyone on every single house, you know down the block and I was really jealous because all the kids had these like war stories of being stung by wasps and bees and they're always bragging about it and You know, dah, dah, dah, and so I saw a wasp just sitting on the sidewalk in front of my neighbor Stevie Mullins house and this is bonkers, but I was like this is my moment And I was barefoot this summer and I just I stepped on it I fucking stepped on it And then I totally freaked out because it hurt of course like a motherfucker and started screaming Psychotically my dad so he he worked for the st. Paul public schools. He was not at home My mom was, you know at home, but we had no car, you know, there was just whatever She must have like heard me screaming, right?
And so comes gets me But like my neighbor's dad like has to come and pick me up and carry me home to my mom I mean like immediately he's like holy shit Adele's like down we gotta like get her I mean everyone mobilized, you know and took care of me and made sure that I was all right It was like neighborhood watch, you know Also, I doubt it's crazy. Okay. Yes, but also like the biggest fear of bees is is someone allergic So you didn't even like your kid you don't think about like oh, I can go into some weird anaphylactic shock You just wanted to be part of the club. Totally Who's never been stung by a wah at my couple years ago?
Wep you about married and outside at this barn And there was a wasp and that thing jumped from person to person and just you know how they think it's the wasp that That doesn't leave the stinger and it can pop and pop and pop and so everyone That's a great story though, but it's true like, you know We used to play outside and like moms would yell yes Like where are you and then some other mom would go I got her over here, you know, and then it was like okay Like it was I walked to kindergarten Liz Thanks I walked to kindergarten, you know, my mom walked me one time the first day so I knew the root and then I was like, huh? See you later. I know My mom would send me to the store with a note to get cigarettes Like go down to the store and with any money left over get yourself some candy But yeah, it was um there was a trust factor that was kind of next level Yeah, you know, and it's true because listen my parents didn't really agree or like every single neighbor on my block But like, you know when I was down and flailing with a bee sting everyone came together and helped me, you know And brought me to my parents Your dodo just decided to fucking Be part of the bee. I don't know.

I am so watch out But you know, um, you know, I was just I don't even know where to go with this But I just wanted to say that like the thing that I don't I don't I'm not like a I'm not a political speaker, you know, I'm not like a I'm not that type of person But so forgive me if this sounds like naive, but you know, I was trying to explain this to Uh my stepson so I was like he's like, why are they doing this? He is coming after my family Kate fear now streaming on apple tv subscription acquired for apple tv I don't know so I was looking it up and I thought it said like operation metro surge or something was the name of the operation And so correct me if i'm wrong because i'm assuming you know, you know the answers to this or some of them The idea was to get dangerous People who've committed who've already committed crimes right off the street who are also illegal immigrants So it's like twofold right so it's like they're they're illegal Only illegal it's only undocumented people who have committed terrible crimes because that's the thing One of the biggest misnomers about ice is that they aren't the police their job is literally just to do immigration enforcement So for them to be interacting with citizens lawful citizens Detaining lawful citizens detaining an immigrant who is on any kind of path to citizenship Is is against the constitution and even if they are I mean, this is just like in the before times when there were laws Um how it should work even if you are a person who is a horrible criminal who is here Without any legal documentation You're supposed to be detained and then sent through the legal process Right and then and then be deported for your crimes if you went through a legal process They found you guilty and that is the way it's supposed to go right so when you see elderly shopkeepers and and people who are In the system and they just a federal judge here who is a george bush nominee. He clerked for Antonin Scalia Has identified on his own 90 some cases of people who are being detained illegally because they are going through the proper legal channels and he demanded that they be released from custody and I not released them released one of them that the judge identified the judges demanding that the head of the Enforcement come to his chambers and explain why he should not be held in contempt of court for not releasing these people I mean, this is unprecedented shit, right? Right and so um, you know and just like watching Yeah, so it's it's supposed to be this worst of the worst thing, but truly right now minute just framing Minnesota in context also um, Minnesota is like 24th in the number of undocumented immigrants that exist in the country Um and the Somali immigrants that are here have temporary protected statuses because they um fled a civil war and were refugees And also like it's something the statistic is I think something like 87 of the immigrant community that's here is here um in some kind of legal process to get um status or our citizens and so um Knowing that there are 23 other states that have um More undocumented people whatever Um, the target I think when I look at it the target is he really ran this time on saying that Undocumented people were destroying america.
Yeah, and that trans people were dangerous right and queer people are dangerous and minnesota has been a Refuge for so many people. We have the most liberal refugee policy of all 50 states And started during the vietnam war bringing you know starting with kimonian among people Yeah, not these regions expanding to Somali folks Ethiopian folks, Latino folks Um, and then we became a trans haven state when these laws started becoming terrible And the fact that the state is thriving because of these communities not in spite of these communities Um is destroying Donald Trump's narrative and because his so single focus his grievance and revenge that he has to destroy Um the truth about immigrants the truth about trans people and that minnesota is a shining example Like and I think the thing that's backfiring so profoundly is exactly what you said like do not attack a winter people in the winter dumb Yeah, but also um, you know, they hate us because we don't hate each other And I think that um people don't come out in these conditions and don't make these decisions to put their whole selves on the line Unless they're defending a place that has truly served them well and minnesota has served its people so well Um, that's why we're fighting for it. We're not fighting because it's a shipple like that doesn't even make sense, right? It's like more gaslight.
So yeah, no That's so beautifully put and I oh my gosh. I feel bad. I think we might have lost lu. Yeah, maybe he'll come back For a little talking is recording our house is literally chaos.
I don't know why it's not working there, but I think that that That was so beautifully put and I think that um what for me is just like so hard to square is that I I'm kind of like a I have a hard time because I'm sort of a literal person and so when I hear like, oh, this is what they're They're the idea around that Operation is I'm like, okay, but then I go gee, but then How come they're just stopping a random woman who's black on the street and asking her for her papers? Like I watched a video of a Somali woman who was literally just walking in her neighborhood in minneapolis and they surrounded her and were demanding Papers and she's just like I'm a citizen. I am from minneapolis. I am walking in my neighborhood And I don't know what else to call it then other that to me.
It just seems racist. I mean, I don't know because is that I'm like so you're just pointing out anyone who's not white to ask them for their papers that doesn't even make sense and so to me, yes So like that's just that's just white supremacy right like that's the main push to me It's sort of like you're calling it this thing right like but how is she a violent criminal? Where's if you don't even know what the fuck she is? All you know is that she's not white right and she's walking on a street so like I guess that's where I'm like, okay I understand that people have their blinders on and they're going like I need ice they're gonna keep me safe and da da da da Right like the ones who are like I'm pro ice and I'm like What are you actually for because if you're saying you're pro ice but you're seeing what they're doing and it doesn't match the description of the goal of the operation How are you?
Justifying that yeah, what I often like to ask people when they say that and it really it really has them having to think I say how does what they're doing align with your values like I asked that question specifically so that somebody has to say well and then They have to do a checklist of what they've seen right what are my values? You know, yeah exactly and so but and I think it's important for the people for everybody to also remember that the Donald Trump petitioned the Supreme Court To ask them to be able to have agents detain people if they didn't seem American through the color of their skin Yeah, or like their accents and the Supreme Court granted them permission and so once you decide Um, there are skin colors that aren't American or their accents that are American. Yep. Yep If it walks like a white supremacist and talks like a white supremacist, it probably is one, right?
So yeah, because it's like to me. How do you even try to Mask that now, you know, it's like this seems very Um out there and exposed and and don't you fucking care? You're that's as crazy. You know, like this is actually Crazy and and it makes me really nervous actually to think like that's the Supreme Court is allowing that because then I think like And I and I get very like scared then I'm like well, what's safe?
You know, is there anything that's gonna be able to protect us? It's like what does even a judge mean then, you know, and that's like the highest court in the land, right? Yeah, I mean, I don't know what to do with the press. I don't know it's those are rhetorical questions.
I guess 100% so to really just um Subvert somebody's constitutional rights and to listen to the people who are running these enforcement agencies say that um The right to do process in a in in our court system is different for people who are undocumented than people who are not Is not true Our constitution specifically said people not citizens for the very reason to protect right people on this soil, right? And so um, There's so much bastardization of What is literally in the constitution and what is what rights people have and because people are you know, we just don't even teach that shit anymore Or people haven't learned it since they were in schoolhouse rock civics class 6 grade that um the recollection of What branch of government has has um the power to do what seems like it goes unchallenged because the people don't know And you know To check trump art what are we doing to we're like just picking and choosing when we decide we follow the constitution or when we decide? You know, it's just like, okay I don't know this is kind of working for me right now But you know in this situation, it's not and it's like so then you actually don't give a shit about the constitution Right you care about yourself in terms right? Exactly and to think and sort of and to operate under some guys that People who don't believe or think the way you do um, don't deserve full protections under the constitution is Pretty scary because it really does um Create this um space that having um A different approach to how we govern and solve problems.
Um if that approach is Different than what I think Um, you deserve to die. You are the enemy like it's gotten to that point, you know, and we aren't even in a place anymore where we're talking about Um, we can't even agree on the realities of the problem Like it used to be that like we all agreed that climate change existed and the fight was how do we battle it? Right, but now when you are denying the existence of a problem Um, I don't even know that how you get to a solution because people are saying that that problem doesn't exist. You're making it up It's like oh my god.
You were kidding me. That's that's basically why I feel Unhinged like it's like you what you're just talking about is like then what's a fucking answer to anything. I hate this It's really really hard and you know, I don't know but like I'm a person who like I I like to I like to like lay out a problem and then like have comfort knowing that There's a there's a solution that I can work towards right like I couldn't live with the anxiety of Of a conspiracy theory that is clearly not true Like it must feel like if somebody insisted to me that two plus two equal five Like I would really go into a panic like I would have to take pills and I feel like When when we got with facts, you know like about vaccines or whatever like and people like just like not believing what's happening and instead believing Undergarbage, how do you not walk around with a level of just like nervousness because the comfort is in The truth the comfort is in that so I don't know Oh These people scare me because they are wholly doubling down on so much awfulness, you know Just like trying to make jeffrey. I'm staying okay trying to make these files.
Okay trying to make all this shit. Okay It's like oh my god them the They really hate women. I was just I was gonna say like we really end up coming to a thing Don't be this unfortunate thing, which is like gee we really fucking hate women so much still I mean if you love to think we don't but damn like And you get down to it. It's like that's dark because it's still pointing at that and that fucking sucks So it does and like all I can take away from that is we're doing like we're doing something right for ourselves Just like they really hate minnesota.
We must be doing something right if this particular administration is coming down on our kindness you know they hate women because Despite every obstacle they've put in front of us We thrive and do better than them when they have no obstacles in front of them I'm sorry. We don't honor your mediocrity anymore, but um But that i'm not a teacher, please. I'm sorry. I cannot honor this mediocrity your honor any longer We're actually going to pick somebody better than you based on them being better than you and that happens to be a woman And now you're mad because you just didn't come along to the party like i'm sorry Come on Hi This is a man who's ready to vote for a woman.
