Feminist Horror (Part 1)

King Loke, Ericka, and Adrian delve into the world of Feminist Horror! Most horror movies obsess over frightening monsters—in feminist horror, the real terror lies in the societal pressures, gender roles, and objectification women endure daily. This episode unpacks how films like The Substance, Run, Sweetheart, Run, and Companion expose the hidden horrors of objectification, societal control, and toxic masculinity, reshaping the way we see gender dynamics in horror narratives. You’ll discover how fear uniquely manifests in women’s experiences, from the commodification of bodies in The Substance to the gaslighting and powerlessness in Run, Sweetheart, Run. We break down the transformative power of agency—how characters reclaim control, challenge cultural expectations, and fight back against oppressive forces—using costumes, violence, and even menstrual blood as symbols of resistance. Explore how feminist horror questions not just the monsters but the social constructs that empower them. We analyze the monster’s hidden face—patriarchy, toxic masculinity, societal silence—that perpetuates this violence. These stories aren’t just entertainment—they’re a call to recognize the ongoing battle for equality and self-determination in both fiction and real life.
